Panther Model 120
The Panther Model 120 was a British motorcycle made between 1959 and 1966 by Phelon & Moore. An enlarged Panther Model 100, the 120 had a reputation for being less reliable with a tendency for rapid clutch wear, problematical roller bearings and heavy oil consumption. As competitors produced modern designs, Panther ran into trouble obtaining supplies of Burman gearboxes and Lucas Magdynos, so production ceased in 1966 and the company was wound up. Development The Panther sloper engine designed by Granville Bradshaw remained unchanged for 25 years and the 650 cc 'heavyweight' had many of the Model 100 components. The increased capacity was achieved by boring out the Model 100 cylinder by 1 mm and increasing the stroke by 6 mm. As well as increased low speed torque this improved acceleration and top end cruising speed. This put additional strain on the main bearings and crankcases, leading to reliability problems. Phelon & Moore
Phelon & Moore manufactured motorcycles in Cleckheaton, Yorkshire, England from 1904 to 1967 particularly those under the Panther marque. They became identified with one particular design of motorcycle which had a large sloping 40-degree single-cylinder engine as a stressed member of the frame. This design spanned the entire history of the company, starting with a 500 cc model and ending with a 645 cc model. The sloping stressed member concept was patented in 1901 by Joah ("John") Carver Phelon and his nephew Harry Rayner (Patent GB190103516). Phelon & Rayner made the first chain-driven motorcycle in 1900. The Phelon & Rayner machines were in production up until 1903 (Main Article : Phelon & Rayner 1.75 hp), but they also licensed the design to Humber Motorcycles, who produced motorcycles based on it from 1902 until 1906. Burman and Sons Ltd, of Ryland Road, Birmingham, West Midlands, manufactured Burman-Douglas steering gear. Panther Model 100
The Panther Model 100 was a British motorcycle. It had a 598 cc, 6.5:1 compression ratio, , OHV sloper engine in a frame where the engine replaces the front down-tube. Panthers were manufactured in Cleckheaton, Yorkshire from 1900 to 1967. Launched in 1932, the Model 100 continued through to 1963. Development A 598cc engine was used in the Model 85 Redwing (previously Model 80) from 1929 to 1930 and the Model 60 (previously Model 3) from 1928 to 1935. Granville Bradshaw
Granville Eastwood Bradshaw OBE, AFRAeS (1887–1969) was an English engineer and inventor who designed motorcycle, auto, and aero-engines. History Bradshaw was born in Preston, Lancashire in 1887 as the son of William and Annie Bradshaw. His father was a jeweler and optician. Bradshaw's early work was involved with the early pioneers of flight, which led him to become an expert on stressing. He designed the Star Monoplane including the engine for Star Aircraft when he was 19, which he later flew. He then started to work on aero-engines and was the co-founder of the All-British Engine Company (later ABC Motors then Walton Motors). The ABC radial aero-engines designed and built during the First World War were extremely advanced and the government placed large orders for the Dragonfly.
