Pantelis Karasevdas
Pantelis Karasevdas (; 1877 – 14 March 1946) was a Greek sport shooter. He was a member of Panachaikos Gymnastikos Syllogos, that merged in 1923 with Gymnastiki Etaireia Patron to become Panachaiki Gymnastiki Enosi. Karasevdas competed at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens, where he won a gold medal for the host country. Biography Karasevdas was born in the town of Astakos in 1877 and he studied law at the University of Athens, but would later become a military officer with participation almost in every military event of Greece from the Greco-Turkish War of 1897 to the Greek Resistance during World War II, including the First Balkan War where he was seriously injured in Samos. A prominent Venizelist and anti-Royalist, he was elected an MP since 1910 and was voted in two more times. The men's 25 metre military pistol was one of the five shooting sports, sport shooting events on the Shooting at the 1896 Summer Olympics, 1896 Summer Olympics shooting programme. 16 competitors from four nations entered the military pistol match, held on 10 April. Each shot thirty rounds in five strings of six at a target 25 metres away. The winner, John Paine (sharpshooter), John Paine of the United States, hit the target 25 times. His brother, Sumner Paine, hit the target 23 times. They used American-made military Colt's Manufacturing Company, Colt revolvers. Background This was the only appearance of the men's 25 metre military pistol event. Competition format The competition had each shooter fire 30 shots, in 5 strings of 6, at a range of 25 metres. Panellinios G.S. (Greek: Πανελλήνιος Γ.Σ.), full name, Panellinios Gymnastikos Syllogos (Greek: Πανελλήνιος Γυμναστικός Σύλλογος), is a Greek multi-sport club that is located in Athens and was founded in 1891. It is one of the oldest and more successful multi-sports clubs in Greece and also one of the oldest sports clubs in Europe. The name Panellinios can be translated as ''Pan-Hellenic'' in English, and may be used as an adjective that embraces ''the Greek Nation''. Gymnastikos Syllogos can be translated as gymnastics club. Venizelism
Venizelism () was one of the major political movements in Greece beginning from the 1910s. The movement first formed under Eleftherios Venizelos in the 1910s and saw a resurgence of support in the 1960s when Georgios Papandreou united a coalition of old Venizelists and nationalist politicians. The movement was characterized by the beliefs of Eleftherios Venizelos and the ideas of Greek irredentism supporting the Megali Idea. It had a Francophile stance as the ideas of the French Revolution and the idea of one state which should have all the lands predominantly inhabited by a single ethnicity. In WWI, the Venizelists wished to join the Entente, mainly due to the entrance of the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria, which was one of the highest chances to gain all lands Greeks claim and thus fulfilling the Megali idea.
