Pannier Market, Bideford
The Pannier Market in Bideford in North Devon is a large covered Victorian architecture, Victorian Pannier Market, pannier market together with the Butcher's Row of small artisan stalls running along the lower level of the Market. There has been a market on the site since 1675. Since 1989 it has been a Listed building, Grade II listed building on the register of Historic England. History Origins Bideford's market traces its origins to 1204 when Sir Richard Grenville, Lord of the Manor of Bideford, refers to it in a Charter setting out the rights of local people. These rights were confirmed in a Charter of 1272 granted by Henry III of England, Henry III at which time the Medieval market was located at the bottom of the present High Street, by the river. These rights were renewed when Bideford received its Charter of Incorporation in 1573 which also established a town council and a Mayor of Bideford. The Church of St Mary is the Anglicanism, Anglican parish church for the town of Bideford in Devon in the UK. Built in 1865, it replaces a Norman architecture, Norman church of 1260. The church has been Listed building, Grade II* listed by Historic England since 1949Grade II* listing for St Mary's church, Bideford - Historic England database and comes under the Diocese of Exeter. Charles Kingsley
Charles Kingsley (12 June 1819 – 23 January 1875) was a broad church priest of the Church of England, a university professor, social reformer, historian, novelist and poet. He is particularly associated with Christian socialism, the working men's college, and forming labour cooperatives, which failed, but encouraged later working reforms. He was a friend and correspondent of Charles Darwin. Life and character Kingsley was born in Holne, Devon, the elder son of the Reverend Charles Kingsley and his wife, Mary Lucas Kingsley. His brother Henry Kingsley (1830–1876) and sister Charlotte Chanter (1828–1882) also became writers. He was the father of the novelist Lucas Malet (Mary St. Leger Kingsley, 1852–1931) and the uncle of the traveller and scientist Mary Kingsley (1862–1900). Kelly's Directory (or more formally, the Kelly's, Post Office and Harrod & Co Directory) was a trade directory in England that listed all businesses and tradespeople in a particular city or town, as well as a general directory of postal addresses of local gentry, landowners, charities, and other facilities. In effect, it was a Victorian version of today's Yellow Pages. Many reference libraries still keep their copies of these directories, which are now an important source for historical research. Origins The eponymous originator of the directory was Frederic Festus Kelly.
