Panglong, Southern Shan State
Panglong ( shn, ပၢင်လူင်, ''Paang⁰long⁰'', ; , ) is a town in Loilem Township of Loilem District, southern Shan State, Myanmar. The town is also home to Panglong University. History Since 1957, Panglong has served as the headquarters of the Shan monastic education under the administration of the Shan State Sangha Council, with its main base at Wat Pitakat. The Shan State Sangha Councial is also responsible for the project of translating the Buddhist canonical texts, tipitaka, into the Shan language. The project was founded and sponsored by Sao Shwe Thaike, the Saopha (ruling prince) of Yawnghwe State and the first president of the Union of Burma (now Myanmar). Pan Lon
Pan Lon ( zh, c=班弄, p=Bānnòng) is the capital of Panlong Subtownship, Hopang District, in the Wa Self-Administered Division of Myanmar. Geography The town is located west of the Salween on a high mountain valley between two ridges. The area is near the border with China, which lies at Mong Ling Shan mountain, about 11 km to the NE. Mong Ko
Mong Ko ( my, မုန်းကိုးမြို့; zh, c=勐古, p=Měng gǔ), sometimes spelled Mongko or Monekoe and also known as Man Kan, Man Guo and Panglong, is a town in Mu Se Township, Mu Se District, northern Shan State. Like many towns in the region, Mong Ko is known to be a hotspot for drug production and trade. Geography Mong Ko lies by the China–Myanmar border, 25 km east of Pang Hseng (Kyu Koke). There is a border checkpoint in the town. The town on the Chinese part of the border is Manghai in Mangshi county-level city, Yunnan Province. History The Communist Party of Burma (CPB) entered Shan State on New Year Day 1968, captured Mong Ko, and established the first war zone ‘303’ of the CPB North-East Command (NEC). This was quickly followed by ‘404’ in Kokang, Kokang substate winning over the local warlord Pheung Kya-shin. For 20 years Pheung controlled Kokang as a member of the Communist Party of Burma. Panglong Agreement
The Panglong Agreement ( my, ပင်လုံစာချုပ် ) was reached in Panglong, Southern Shan State, between the Burmese government under Aung San and the Shan, Kachin, and Chin peoples on 12 February 1947. Aung Zan Wai, Pe Khin, Bo Hmu Aung, Sir Maung Gyi, Dr. Sein Mya Maung, Myoma U Than Kywe were among the negotiators of the historical Panglong Conference negotiated with Bamar leader General Aung San and other ethnic leaders in 1947. The agreement accepted "full autonomy in internal administration for the Frontier Areas" in principle and envisioned the creation of a Kachin State by the Constituent Assembly. It continued the financial relations established between the Shan states and the Burmese federal government, and envisioned similar arrangements for the Kachin Hills and the Chin Hills. The Panglong Conference ( my, ပင်လုံညီလာခံ), held in February 1947, was a historic meeting that took place at Panglong in the Shan States in Burma between the Shan, Kachin and Chin ethnic minority leaders and Aung San, head of the interim Burmese government. Aung Zan Wai, Pe Khin, Bo Hmu Aung, Sir Maung Gyi, Dr. Sein Mya Maung and Myoma U Than Kywe were among the negotiators of the historical Panglong Conference negotiated with Bamar representative General Aung San and other ethnic leaders in 1947. Panglong University
Panglong University ( my, ပင်လုံ တက္ကသိုလ်) is a university in Panglong, Southern Shan State, Myanmar. It is a government institution, aimed at improving education in Southern Shan State. It was opened in 2002. Panglong Town is a well known member of the Panglong Agreement. The university now offers mainly undergraduate and postgraduate (bachelor's, master's and doctorate) degree programmes in education, sciences and law. The university is composed of the major faculties such as Bachelor of Arts: English, history, geology, law, geography and Bachelor of Science: mathematics, zoology, botany, physics, chemistry. There are more than 1,000 students who have graduated from the university.
