Pandanus Rigidifolius
''Pandanus rigidifolius'' is a species of plant in the family Pandanaceae, endemic to Mauritius. Description A low, small, spreading, many-branched tree. It produces many stilt-like roots, along the trunk, but also along the length of the side branches. It can be distinguished by its compact (often trifarious) rosettes of small, rigid, erect, red-spined, deep blue-green leaves. These are usually only 75 cm long and 6 cm wide, folded lengthwise (reduplicate), stiff, erect, and have an abrupt, obtuse leaf tip. The reddish spines are closely set along the margins of the leaves. The small (7–8 cm) fruit head is held erect on a short peduncle, and it is enclosed in three-ranked (trifarious) bracts. Each fruit head is packed with 200–220 small, unilocular drupes, with slightly convex tips. Reginald Edward Vaughan
Reginald Edward Vaughan OBE FRIC (27 October 1895 – 29 April 1987) was a British botanist who lived and worked in Mauritius from 1923. Biography Vaughan was born in Wooburn, Buckinghamshire, 27 October 1895, the son of Herbert and Jane Vaughan, who lived at Dell House, Wooburn. He went to Imperial College where he was awarded a second class degree in Chemistry in 1920. In 1916, at the age of 20, he enlisted in the Royal Engineers as a Pioneer and served until he was discharged, September 1918, when he was appointed Temporary Second Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery. He first worked at Harper Adams College but in 1923 he moved to Mauritius where he worked as a chemistry teacher at the Royal College Curepipe. His interest in botany developed and from 1934 he collaborated with Paul Octave Wiehe on botanical exploration and conservative, seeing the creation of 16 nature reserves between 1951 and 1974, and in 1959 the creation of the Mauritius Herbarium. Pandanaceae is a family of flowering plants native to the tropics and subtropics of the Old World, from West Africa through the Pacific. It contains 982 known species in five genera, of which the type genus, ''Pandanus'', is the most important, with species like ''Pandanus amaryllifolius'' and karuka (''Pandanus julianettii'') being important sources of food. ''Pandanus microcarpus'' is a species of plant in the family Pandanaceae, endemic to Mauritius. Description This small (5-6m), slender, freely branching tree can be distinguished from its closest relatives by its drooping, dark yellow-green leaves with red marginal spines. It can also easily be distinguished by its small (7–9 cm), oval, red to purple fruit-head, which is born on a twisted, recurved stalk. Each fruit-head is packed with 75-200 2.5 cm-long drupes. The exposed top of each drupe is flat or slightly convex (not forming a domed or pyramid shape). Unusually for its genus, it sometimes bears staminodes. ''Pandanus drupaceus'' is a species of plant in the family Pandanaceae, endemic to Mauritius. Description A low-lying, spreading, freely-branching tree. Decumbent branches can lie along the ground and root to form new trees. There are only a few stilt-roots at the base of the trunk, and the pale grey bark is cracked and fissured. It can easily be distinguished from related species by its rosettes of wide, flat, stiff, incurved leaves. These have reddish-orange marginal spines only near the tip of the leaf, and not near the leaf base.
