Panama's National Basketball Team
The Panama men's national basketball team (Spanish: Selección nacional de baloncesto de Panamá) represents Panama in men's international basketball competitions, The team represents both FIBA and FIBA Americas. With four qualifications to the Basketball World Cup, one qualification to the Olympic Games, and one medal at the Pan American Games, Panama has traditionally been the dominant basketball power in Central America. Flor Meléndez
Flor Meléndez Montañez (born January 12, 1947) is a Puerto Rican retired basketball player and current coach. He is a former head coach of Puerto Rico men's national basketball team, Puerto Rico’s men’s national basketball team, Argentina men's national basketball team, and Panama men's national basketball team. Currently, he coaches in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional as an assistant coach for Gigantes de Carolina (men's basketball), Gigantes de Carolina. Biography Early life Meléndez is the son of Florencio Meléndez and Emilia Montañez. He grew up alongside seven brothers and three sisters. Two of his brothers, Jorge Meléndez (basketball), Jorge and Diego Meléndez, Diego, also had notable careers as basketball players. Meléndez enjoyed sports since a young age. 2007 FIBA Americas Championship
The 2007 FIBA Americas Championships later known as the FIBA AmeriCup (or The Tournament of the Americas), was a basketball tournament held at Thomas & Mack Center, in Las Vegas, from August 22, to September 2. It was the thirteenth staging of the FIBA AmeriCup. The tournament was originally going to be hosted in Venezuela. However, the Venezuelan federation failed to pay a $1.5 million fee, as of August 31, 2006. As such, their hosting privileges were taken away. Several countries had shown interest in hosting the tournament, including: United States, Chile, Argentina, and Puerto Rico. The United States had not hosted it since 1992, Chile had never hosted it, Argentina had held it last in 2001, and Puerto Rico had last hosted in 2003. The 2005 FIBA Americas Championship, later known as the FIBA AmeriCup (also known as The Tournament of the Americas), was hosted by the Dominican Republic, from August 24, to September 4, 2005. The games were played in Santo Domingo. This FIBA AmeriCup was to earn the four berths allocated to the Americas for the 2006 FIBA World Championship, in Japan. Argentina had already qualified, by winning the gold medal at the 2004 Olympics. Brazil won the tournament, the country's third AmeriCup championship. The 1984 Tournament of the Americas, since 2005 called the FIBA Americas Championship or FIBA AmeriCup, was the 2nd edition of this basketball tournament, hosted in Sao Paulo, Brazil from 15–24 May 1984. The outcome would determine the three berths allocated to the Americas for the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics and five berths for the 1986 FIBA World Championship in Spain. The United States did not participate in the tournament, claiming host-courtesy. Brazil was undefeated in the round robin tournament and were accompanied to the Olympic games by Canada and Uruguay. Basketball at the 2007 Pan American Games took place at the indoor arena in the Autódromo de Jacarépagua in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, an arena which was built specially for the Pan Am Games. Brazil was the reigning Pan American champion in the men's competition, while Cuba defended its title in the women's competition. Each competition had eight teams divided in two groups. In each group, each team played against all others once and the two best advanced to the semifinals. The two latter in each group played in 5th to 8th classification matches. The women's competition started on July 20 with the final held on July 24. The men's competition began on July 25, with the finals on July 29.
