Pan Am (band)
Pan Am was an alternative rock band from Auckland, New Zealand. The band was formed in 2000 by Paul Barrett and Cole Goodley, who were friends from their school days at Avondale College in Auckland, New Zealand. They released an EP, ''New Concepts in Sound Recording'' in May 2002 and a self-titled Album ''Pan Am'' in August 2003, both with Flying Nun Records/Festival Mushroom records NZ. The band also contributed two songs to the Under the Influence – 21 Years of Flying Nun Records album and featured on the compilation albums ''The Locals soundtrack'' and ''Speed of Sound — a Flying Nun Compilation''. Flying Nun Records
Flying Nun Records is a New Zealand independent record label formed in Christchurch in 1981 by music store manager Roger Shepherd. Described by ''The Guardian'' as "one of the world's great independent labels", Flying Nun is notable for bringing global attention to the Dunedin sound, a cultural and musical movement in early 1980s Dunedin, which gave rise to modern indie rock. History The label formed in the wake of a flurry of new post-punk-inspired labels appearing in New Zealand in the early 1980s, in particular Propeller Records in Auckland. Shepherd had intended to record the original local music of Christchurch, but soon the label rose to national prominence by championing the emerging music of Dunedin. Under The Influence – 21 Years Of Flying Nun Records
''Under the Influence — 21 Years of Flying Nun Records'' is a double album that includes tracks by various bands signed or related to the Flying Nun Records label. The album was planned as a celebration of the 21st anniversary of Flying Nun Records. Bands invited to be part of the album were asked to record one or two songs; if two songs, then one should be a cover of a Flying Nun song that influenced or inspired them and the other song should be a new and unreleased song of their own. These were all to be recorded on a single day at York Street Studio on 22 March 2002. The D4
The D4 was a rock band from Auckland, New Zealand. Their music was released by Hollywood Records in the U.S., Flying Nun Records in New Zealand and by Infectious Records in the UK. The group was assembled by vocalist/ guitarists Dion Palmer and Jimmy Christmas, who put together a collection of songs and built a four-piece combo, featuring founding members English Jake and Rich Mixture, during late 1998 and started playing at the Frisbee Leisure Lounge parties along Symonds Street, followed shortly thereafter by inner city pub gigs. They have also played at the Big Day Out and at the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas. The group's debut EP was released by Flying Nun Records in 1999 featuring the tracks "Girl" and "Come On!". The band was later enhanced by members Vaughan Williams (Vaughn) ( bass) and Daniel Pooley (Beaver) ( drums). The D4 went on a UK tour supporting The Hives. Betchadupa
Betchadupa was a New Zealand pop/ rock group, formed in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1997. The band featured Liam Finn, Chris Garland, Joe Bramley, and Matt Eccles. Betchadupa (originally called Lazy Boy – the name change followed threatened legal action from the chair company of the same name) had its origins when Liam and Matt met whilst their families were on holidays in New Zealand. Their first song, written when both boys were 11, was called 'Gee This Sounds Good, I Can't Believe We Wrote It'. Their unique name was lifted from the text of a Polish-American's T-shirt that declared "You Betchadupa I'm Polish", ''dupa'' being the casual Polish word for ''arse''. The band based themselves in London, UK, after spending much of 2004 in Melbourne, Australia. The band have been on hiatus while Liam has undertaken a solo career.
