Pam Williams
Pamela Margaret Jean Williams (née Pearce; 4 July 1933 – 5 October 2021) was a New Zealand businesswoman and philanthropist. She was the founder or co-founder of six companies, including Wanganui Seafoods, one of the largest seafood export businesses in New Zealand. She was a benefactor of many organisations in and around her home town of Whanganui, including the Sarjeant Gallery and Bushy Park. In 2017, Williams was inducted into the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame. Early life and family Born on 4 July 1933, Williams was raised on a farm in the Waitōtara Valley, north of Whanganui. She was home-schooled until her last two years of secondary education when she boarded at Woodford House. Her father, Frank Pearce, died when she was a teenager, and she and her two brothers took over the running of the farm. Whanganui
Whanganui (; ), also spelled Wanganui, is a city in the Manawatū-Whanganui region of New Zealand. The city is located on the west coast of the North Island at the mouth of the Whanganui River, New Zealand's longest navigable waterway. Whanganui is the 19th most-populous urban area in New Zealand and the second-most-populous in Manawatū-Whanganui, with a population of as of . Whanganui is the ancestral home of Te Āti Haunui-a-Pāpārangi and other Whanganui Māori tribes. The New Zealand Company began to settle the area in 1840, establishing its second settlement after Wellington. In the early years most European settlers came via Wellington. Whanganui greatly expanded in the 1870s, and freezing works, woollen mills, phosphate works and wool stores were established in the town. The Queen's Service Order, established by royal warrant of Queen Elizabeth II on 13 March 1975, is used to recognise "valuable voluntary service to the community or meritorious and faithful services to the Crown or similar services within the public sector, whether in elected or appointed office". PS Waimarie
The Paddle Steamer ''Waimarie'' is an historic riverboat based on the Whanganui River in New Zealand. She is the only coalfired paddle steamer still operating in New Zealand. ''Waimarie'' was built in 1899 by Yarrow & Co. in London and transported to New Zealand in kitset form to be assembled at Whanganui. She operated on the Whanganui River for 49 years before being laid up. In 1952 she sank at her moorings and lay in the mud for the next 40 years. However, in 1993 ''Waimarie'' was raised from the riverbed, and a six year restoration effort led to her return to service in 2000. PS ''Waimarie'' is now a popular tourist attraction in Whanganui, with 2 hour cruises on the river available most days during the summer season. Cooks Gardens
Cooks Gardens is a multi-purpose stadium in Wanganui, New Zealand. It is currently used mostly for rugby union matches, athletics and cycling. The main stadium, known as Westpac Stadium, is able to hold 20,700 people with 3,500 covered seats. History Cooks Gardens use as a sporting facility commenced in 1896. Since then Cooks Gardens has been the venue of a number of the world's historic sporting occasions. One of these occasions was on 27 January 1962 when tens of thousands of spectators crammed into Cooks Gardens to witness athlete Peter Snell break the world record for the mile. Since then, the four minute mile has been broken 63 times at Cooks Gardens by 41 athletes from various countries around the world.
