A dovecote or dovecot , doocot ( Scots) or columbarium is a structure intended to house pigeons or doves. Dovecotes may be free-standing structures in a variety of shapes, or built into the end of a house or barn. They generally contain pigeonholes for the birds to nest. Pigeons and doves were an important food source historically in the Middle East and Europe and were kept for their eggs and dung. History and geography The oldest dovecotes are thought to have been the fortress-like dovecotes of Upper Egypt, and the domed dovecotes of Iran. In these regions, the droppings were used by farmers for fertilizing. Pigeon droppings were also used for leather tanning and making gunpowder. In some cultures, particularly Medieval Europe, the possession of a dovecote was a symbol of status and power and was consequently regulated by law. Palomares, Almería
Palomares is an agricultural, fishing, and tourist town along the Mediterranean Sea in the Almería province of Andalusia, Spain. It is about above sea level. The village falls within the municipality of Cuevas del Almanzora. The ruins of ''El Artial'' lie just outside the village. Crashes of a B-52 and a KC-135 in 1966 The town is noted for a fatal accident in 1966 in which a B-52 Stratofortress of the Strategic Air Command crashed after a midair collision with a KC-135 Stratotanker plane, causing radioactive contamination after its payload of four hydrogen bombs (H-bombs) was dispersed and crashed. There were four thermonuclear weapons in the bomber. The high-explosive igniters in two of these bombs detonated on impact, spreading radioactive material, including deadly plutonium-239, over a wide area of the Spanish countryside, but safety mechanisms and electronics prevented nuclear explosions. 1966 Palomares B-52 Crash
The 1966 Palomares B-52 crash, also called the Palomares incident, occurred on 17 January 1966, when a B-52G bomber of the United States Air Force's Strategic Air Command collided with a KC-135 tanker during mid-air refueling at over the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Spain. The KC-135 was destroyed when its fuel load ignited, killing all four crew members. The B-52G broke apart, killing three of the seven crew members aboard. At the time of the accident, the B-52G was carrying four B28FI Mod 2 Y1 thermonuclear (hydrogen) bombs, all of which fell to the surface. Three were found on land near the small fishing village of Palomares in the municipality of Cuevas del Almanzora, Almería, Spain. The non-nuclear explosives in two of the weapons detonated upon impact with the ground, resulting in the contamination of a area with radioactive plutonium. Ramón Palomares
David Ramón Sánchez Palomares (7 May 1935 – 4 March 2016) was a Venezuelan poet, born in Escuque. In 1975 received the National Prize for Literature; in 2006 the first Víctor Valera Mora International Prize for Poetry; and in 2010 the Ibero-America Award for Literature. For 1952 worked as teacher in the San Cristóbal Normal School. Six years later, graduated as Professor of Literature in the Pedagogical Institute of Caracas. Taught in secondary schools in Nueva Esparta and Trujillo states, also in the capital city, Caracas. In the University of the Andes graduates in Literature. His first poetry book: ''El Reino'' (The Kingdom) (1958), is sponsored by the intellectual group Sardio. In 1963 was part of the aesthetic movement El Techo de la Ballena, and participates as editor in the magazine ''Rayado sobre el Techo''. Palacio Del Marqués De Palomares
The Palacio del Marqués de Palomares (Spanish for Palace of the Marquis of Palomares) was part of a spectacular complex of buildings in Seville, Spain. It was located on the site of the current-day El Corte Inglés store Del Duque. It was acquired in 1879 by Juan Antonio Fernandez de la Arriba, a successful merchant, as part of the Plaza del Duque complex belonging to the Marquis of Palomares. He used the building as part of his fabric business. A unique blend of architectural styles, it proved to be too difficult to maintain and was demolished in 1965. History On the site was the vast Palacio de los Duques de Medina Sidonia (Los Guzmanes) which was destroyed after the Napoleonic invasion and there was built the mid-19th century Palacio del Marqués de Palomares.
