Palokastër
Palokastër ( sq-definite, Palokastra), is a village in the administrative unit of Cepo, Gjirokastër, southern Albania. The village is well known because in its vicinity is the Paleokastra castle. The site was first discovered by British Major William Martin Leake William Martin Leake (14 January 17776 January 1860) was an English military man, topographer, diplomat, antiquarian, writer, and Fellow of the Royal Society. He served in the British military, spending much of his career in the Mediterrane ..., who said that locals called the site Drinopol. Albanian archaeologist Apollon Baçe worked on an expedition from 1974 to 1976, highlighting the size of the site. He dug into the Castle in the shape of a trapezoid with an area of about 1 hectare. Cepo
Cepo is a municipal administrative units, formerly known as communes in the Gjirokastër County, southern Albania. At the 2015 local government reform it became a subdivision of the municipality Gjirokastër. The municipal unit administrative center is Palokastër village and it consists on 10 other villages which are: Fushëbardhë, Zhulat, Taroninë, Mashkullorë, Çepun, Kodër, Plesat, Kardhiq, Prongji and Humelicë. Paleokastra Castle
The Paleokastra Castle is a castle built during late antiquity, located around north of Gjirokastra in the village of Palokastër, in southern Albania. It lies on a river terrace at the confluence between Drino and Kardhiq rivers and occupies a surface area of around . History The castle was built in the late 3rd or early 4th century AD. It was built in a strategic location, easily defendable through the two rivers surrounding it. It was part of a set of castles to secure the Drino valley. It was, however, destroyed soon thereafter by the Goths in 378 AD. The castle was rebuilt thereafter together with 2 churches. It was inhabited until around the 6th century AD. Gjirokastër
Gjirokastër (, sq-definite, Gjirokastra) is a city in the Republic of Albania and the seat of Gjirokastër County and Gjirokastër Municipality. It is located in a valley between the Gjerë mountains and the Drino, at 300 metres above sea level. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, described as "a rare example of a well-preserved Ottoman town, built by farmers of large estate". The city is overlooked by Gjirokastër Fortress, where the Gjirokastër National Folklore Festival is held every five years. William Martin Leake
William Martin Leake (14 January 17776 January 1860) was an English military man, topographer, diplomat, antiquarian, writer, and Fellow of the Royal Society. He served in the British military, spending much of his career in the Mediterranean seaports. He developed an interest in geography and culture of the regions visited, and authored a number of works, mainly about Greece. Life He was born in London to John Martin Leake and Mary Calvert Leake. After completing his education at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Regiment of Artillery in 1794. Having spent four years in the West Indies as lieutenant of marine artillery, he was promoted to captain, and was sent in 1799 by the government to Constantinople to train the forces of the Ottoman Empire in the use of artillery.
