Palo Santo (Shearwater Album)
''Palo Santo'' is an album by Shearwater, released in 2006 on Misra Records. The album was re-released in an expanded, partly re-recorded, fully remastered and repackaged edition in 2007 on Matador Records. The album was inspired by the life and death of the singer Nico; Jonathan Meiburg mentions this on the album ''The Island Arc Live (Excerpts)'', in a recording from Shearwater's January 15, 2011, performance at Austin's Central Presbyterian Church. Shearwater (band)
Shearwater is an American indie rock band from Austin, Texas, led by multi-instrumentalist and lead singer Jonathan Meiburg, a singer-songwriter. The band's music is notable for its imagery based in nature, cerebral yet intimate melodic songs, as well as Meiburg's vocals. History Early years In 1999, Okkervil River band members Jonathan Meiburg and Will Sheff founded Shearwater as an outlet for quieter songs on which they were collaborating. The band's name comes from the shearwater, a tribe of seabirds related to petrels and albatrosses. Meiburg, who holds a master's degree in geography with a focus on ornithology, picked the name mostly for the sound of the word. Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". ''Rook'' is the fifth studio album by American indie rock band Shearwater. It was released on June 3, 2008, on the Matador Records label. The track "Rooks" was the first single from the album. The album was previewed on May 5, 2008 and May 29, 2008, at two special concerts in Manhattan and Austin, Texas. The band toured in support of the album later in 2008. The album gained the band a spot on Entertainment Weekly's "Must List" on May 28. Shearwater released the album on both CD and vinyl, with the vinyl version having a bonus track called "North Col". The cover art is by Kahn & Selesnick. Co-founder Jonathan Meiburg said he chose the title for the sound of the word and the fact that it has multiple meanings. Matador Records is an independent record label, with a roster of mainly indie rock, but also punk rock, experimental rock, alternative rock, and electronic acts. History Matador was created in 1989 by Chris Lombardi in his New York City apartment. Lombardi had brought the Austrian duo H.P. Zinker into Wharton Tiers’ Fun City studio to record Matador's first release, "...and there was light".
