Palmer Archipelago
Palmer Archipelago, also known as Antarctic Archipelago, Archipiélago Palmer, Antarktiske Arkipel or Palmer Inseln, is a group of islands off the northwestern coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It extends from Tower Island in the north to Anvers Island in the south. It is separated by the Gerlache and Bismarck straits from the Antarctic Peninsula and Wilhelm Archipelago, respectively. Palmer Archipelago is located at . History Adrien de Gerlache, leader of the Belgian Antarctic Expedition (1897–1899), discovered the archipelago in 1898. He named it Archipelago Palmer for American Captain Nathaniel Palmer, who navigated these waters in 1820. Hoseason Island
Hoseason Island is an island long and wide, lying west of Trinity Island in the Palmer Archipelago, Antarctica. This name, which has appeared on charts for over 100 years, commemorates James Hoseason, first mate on the ''Sprightly'', an Enderby Brothers sealing ship which operated in these waters in 1824–25. Nathaniel Palmer
Nathaniel Brown Palmer (August 8, 1799June 21, 1877) was an American seal hunter, explorer, sailing captain, and ship designer. He gave his name to Palmer Land, Antarctica, which he explored in 1820 on his sloop ''Hero''. He was born in Stonington, Connecticut, and was a descendant of Walter Palmer, one of the town's founders. Sealing career and Antarctic exploration During the 1810s the hides of Antarctic Ocean seals were highly valued as items for trade with China. Palmer served as second mate on board s first voyage, during which she became the first American vessel known to reach the South Shetland Islands. As a skilled and fearless seal hunter, Palmer achieved his first command at the early age of 21. His vessel, a diminutive sloop named , was only in length. Cobalcescou Island
Cobalescou Island or Cobălcescu Island is a small snow-free island with two rounded summits, lying east-southeast of Veyka Point, the south extremity of Two Hummock Island in the Palmer Archipelago, Antarctica. The island was discovered and named by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition under Gerlache, 1897–99. The established name appears to be a corrupted spelling. The toponym was suggested to Gerlache by Emil Racovitza, Romanian zoologist and botanist of the Belgian Antarctic Expedition, for Romanian scholar Grigore Cobălcescu, a geologist of European reputation. Chukovezer Island ( bg, остров Чуковезер, ostrov Chukovezer, ) is the rocky island lying off the northwest coast of Anvers Island in the Palmer Archipelago, Antarctica. Christiania Islands
The Christiania Islands are a group of islands and rocks between Liège Island and Trinity Island, in the Palmer Archipelago. They were charted by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition, 1897–99, under Gerlache, who named the group for Christiania (now Oslo), Norway, where he obtained assistance and equipment for the expedition. Chionis Island
Chionis Island is an island lying south of Awl Point, Trinity Island, in the Palmer Archipelago. The name Snow Island was used for this feature by whalers in the area in the 1920s, but has not been used on any published map. Since Snow Island in the South Shetland Islands lies just across Bransfield Strait, a new name has been substituted for this feature. Chionis Island was so named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1960 after the sheathbill (''Chionis albus The snowy sheathbill (''Chionis albus''), also known as the greater sheathbill, pale-faced sheathbill, and paddy, is one of two species of sheathbill. Bremen Island
Bremen Island (german: Bremeninsel) is a or uninhabited island, part of the Melchior Islands in the Southern Ocean along the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. A long channel ('' Bremenkanal'') separates Omega Island and Bremen Island. The existence of the channel was discovered during a zodiac excursion on 2 February 2003 by the German cruise ship ''MS Bremen'', named after the German city of Bremen. The name "Bremen Island" was proposed by Bärbel Krämer of Hapag-Lloyd. Bob Island
Bob Island is a rocky island long and high, lying southeast of Cape Errera, on Wiencke Island in the Palmer Archipelago. An island in this vicinity was surveyed and photographed by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition (BelgAE) under Gerlache in the year 1898. It was originally called "Ile Famine", but in the reports resulting from the expedition it was renamed "Ile Bob".
