Palmas (, ''Palm trees''; Xerente language, Akwẽ-Xerénte: ''Akwẽ krikahâzawre wam hã'' ) is the capital and largest city of the States of Brazil, state of Tocantins, Brazil. According to Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, IBGE estimates from 2020, the city had 306,296 inhabitants. Palmas has a metropolitan area with 471,639 inhabitants. Palmas is a barrio in the municipality of Arroyo, Puerto Rico. Its population in 2010 was 3,789. History Palmas was in Spain's gazetteers until Puerto Rico was ceded by Spain in the aftermath of the Spanish–American War under the terms of the Treaty of Paris of 1898 and became an unincorporated territory of the United States. In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census of Puerto Rico finding that combined the population of Palmas, Ancones and Guásimas barrios was 596. Eddie Palmieri
Eddie Palmieri (born December 15, 1936) is an American Grammy Award-winning pianist, bandleader, musician, and composer of Corsican and Puerto Rican ancestry. He is the founder of the bands La Perfecta, La Perfecta II, and Harlem River Drive. Childhood Palmieri's parents Isabel Maldonado Palmieri and Carlos Palmieri moved to New York from Ponce, Puerto Rico, in 1926 and settled in the South Bronxin New York. There, he and his elder brother Charlie Palmieri were born. He accompanied Charlie and participated in many talent contests when he was eight years old. Palmieri continued his education in the city's public school system, where he was constantly exposed to jazz music. He took piano lessons and performed at Carnegie Hall at the age of eleven. ''Palmas'' is an album by the American musician Eddie Palmieri, released in 1994. Palmieri supported the album by playing shows with Milton Nascimento. The album peaked at No. 44 on ''Billboards Jazz Albums chart. It was nominated for a Grammy Award for "Best Latin Jazz Performance". Production The album was produced by Palmieri, who also composed all of its songs. He began working on it in the fall of 1993. Palmieri wanted to record without vocalists, and with the three horn players taking solos; two of the horn players were ex-Jazz Messengers. Gérald Gardrinier (; born 14 October 1967 in Saint-Denis, Réunion), better known by his stage name Gérald de Palmas, is a French singer-songwriter. Biography Early life Gérald de Palmas was born in France. His father was a land surveyor from Brittany and his mother was a French teacher from Réunion. At the age of 10, De Palmas' family left Réunion, to live in Aix-en-Provence, France. At the age of 13, he discovered ska music, and became a fan of the UK band The Specials.
