Palm Desert Public Library
The Palm Desert Library will open on July 1st, 2024 as a City of Palm Desert operated library after the City Council made the decision in 2023 t otake over library operations. The original Palm Desert Library opened its doors in 1962 on Portola Avenue, where it remained for 33 years. Then, in 1995, a new building was planned, financed, and constructed by a partnership between the City of Palm Desert, the County of Riverside, and the College of the Desert. A year later, on April 19, 1996, the newly built 43,000-square foot, state-of-the-art, multi-agency facility on the College of the Desert campus opened at 73300 Fred Waring Drive. While Palm Desert Library currently occupies the southern half of the building and the lobby, the College of the Desert Library occupied the northern half until January 2020. Riverside County Library System
The Riverside County Library System (RCLS), located in Riverside County, California, United States, is a public library system composed of 35 libraries, two museums and two mobile resource vans. The RCLS is a member of the Inland Library Network. It is the first library system in the nation that turned over its entire operation to a private company. Management Prior to July 1997, the Riverside County public libraries were managed by the city of Riverside, California. When property tax money was diverted from libraries to schools in the early 1990s, the library system began to experience cut in hours, dwindling collections, and staff lay-offs. In July 1997, the County hired Library Systems and Services, Inc., located in Germantown, Maryland to operate its sprawling public library system. Library Systems & Services is a private for-profit company that manages municipal libraries on an outsourced basis. It is the largest library outsourcing company in the United States. It runs 20 library systems in 80 locations. Its headquarters are in Rockville, Maryland and it also operates in the UK. The company started in 1982 with the MINI MARC cataloging system and custom software for libraries. It expanded into managing libraries at housed within federal agencies, an opportunity created by Reagan-era privatization policies. College Of The Desert
College of the Desert (COD) is a public community college in Palm Desert, California. COD enrolls about 12,500 students, of which around one third attend college full-time. It serves the Coachella Valley of Riverside County. The college is federally recognized as a Hispanic-serving institution (HSI), receiving Title V grants. COD is the home of the Energy Technology Training Center. COD offers associate degrees and certificate programs. History College of the Desert was established in 1958 after a decade of planning for a junior college district in the Coachella Valley. Voters approved the formation of the district and funded the building of the COD campus with a bond issue. On September 21, 1962, the new college opened on its site in Palm Desert, and in 1966 it gained accreditation. The Jeane and Justin Hilb student center and the Carol L. Palm Desert is a city in Riverside County, California, United States, in the Coachella Valley, approximately east of Palm Springs, northeast of San Diego and east of Los Angeles.
