Palazzolo Sull'Oglio
Palazzolo sull'Oglio (Brescian and Bergamasque: ; locally ) is a city and ''comune'' in the Province of Brescia, in the region of Lombardy in northern Italy. It is located south of Lake Iseo, bordering the Province of Bergamo, and has a population of 20,208. It is the fifth largest city in the Province, after Brescia, Desenzano del Garda, Montichiari and Lumezzane. History The town was founded on the banks of the river Oglio. The first references to the name "Palazzolo" date to 830 AD. Palazzolo was a fundamental industrial centre of Italy at the end of the 19th century (Marzoli, Lanfranchi, Italcementi, Ferrari) and the city was known as the small Italian Manchester. On 24 August 1954, the town was celebrated as a city with a presidential decree. Irene Fargo
Irene Fargo (born Flavia Irene Pozzaglio; 1 November 1962 – 1 July 2022) was an Italian singer, stage actress, and television personality. Life and career Fargo was born as Flavia Pozzaglio in Palazzolo sull'Oglio, Brescia. She started singing as a child, and at just 11 years old she entered the Polyphonic Choir of the city of Chiari. In 1989, she participated at the Castrocaro Music Festival, with the song "Le donne dei soldati veri". Fargo was best known for her two second places at the Sanremo Music Festival, in 1991 with the song "La donna di Ibsen" (whose lyrics are inspired by Henrik Ibsen's ''The Lady from the Sea''), and in 1992 with "Come una Turandot" (inspired by Giacomo Puccini's ''Turandot''). Maurizio Belpietro (born 10 May 1958) is an Italian journalist and television presenter. Biography Belpietro was born in Castenedolo, near Brescia, but he grew up in the town of Palazzolo sull'Oglio. He started his career as a journalist writing for the local newspaper ''Bresciaoggi'' in 1975. Paolo Gorini (18 January 1813 – 2 February 1881) was an Italian mathematician, professor, scientist, and politician renowned as a pioneer of cremation in Europe, primarily in the United Kingdom. Durante Duranti (5 October 1507 – 24 December 1557) was an Italian Roman Catholic bishop and cardinal. Biography Durante Duranti was born in Palazzolo sull'Oglio on 5 October 1507. As a young man, he studied jurisprudence in Brescia and became a cleric in Brescia. Moving to Rome, he became a privy chamberlain in the papal household of Pope Paul III. In 1535, Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, ''iuniore'' made Duranti vicar of the Abbey of San Michele de Coniolo. He served as Prefect of the Pontifical Household under Pope Paul III. On 25 June 1538 he was elected Bishop of Alghero; he was consecrated as a bishop in Rome on 12 March 1540. He was transferred to the see of Cassano on 18 February 1541.
