José Manuel Fortuny
José Manuel Fortuny Arana (22 May 1916 – 2005) was an important communist leader in Latin America. He became well known for his friendship with Guatemalan President Jacobo Árbenz, and was one of the main advisers in his government, which lasted from 1951–54. Árbenz was overthrown by a coup engineered by the United States in 1954, an event which drove Fortuny into exile, along with many of his comrades. Early life José Manuel Fortuny was born to a middle-class family in the Guatemalan Department of Santa Rosa on 22 May, 1916. He was a law student at the University of San Carlos of Guatemala, but did not graduate. Before becoming involved with politics, he had worked variously for the Sterling company, the British Legation, and the broadcaster journal ''Aire.'' Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo ( ca, Marià Fortuny i de Madrazo, italic=no, ; 11 May 1871 – 3 May 1949) was a Spanish fashion designer who opened his couture house in 1906 and continued until 1946. He was the son of the painter Mariano Fortuny y Marsal. Life Fortuny was born on 11 May 1871, to an artistic family in Granada, Spain. His father, a genre painter, died when Fortuny was three years old and his mother, Cecilia, moved the family to Paris, France. It was apparent at a young age that Fortuny was a gifted artist, showing a talent for painting as well as a passion for textiles. During his childhood he was introduced to many different textiles and fabrics, which greatly imprinted upon his creativity. Fortuny Museum
The Museo Fortuny or Fortuny Museum is an art museum in San Marco, in central Venice, Italy. The museum is housed in the Palazzo Pesaro Orfei, now often known as Palazzo Fortuny, where Mariano Fortuny (1871–1949) had a studio in the late nineteenth century, and lived from 1902. The museum presents paintings, fabrics, and Fortuny’s lamps on the first floor, together with the history of the palazzo and its atelier on the second floor. The building still has features created by Fortuny. The working environment is represented through wall-hangings, paintings, and lamps. Fortuny died in 1949, and in 1956 the Palazzo Pesaro Orfei was gifted to the comune of Venice; the comune took full possession only in 1965, after the death of Fortuny's widow, Henriette Negrin. The museum was opened in 1975. It is run by the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia. Palazzo Pesaro Orfei
The Palazzo Pesaro Orfei or Palazzo Pesaro degli Orfei is a historic palace in Venice, in northern Italy. It was built by the Pesaro family in the fifteenth century in Venetian Gothic style. From 1902 it was the home of Mariano Fortuny and his wife Henriette Negrin. It now houses the Museo Fortuny, and may also be called Palazzo Fortuny. History The palace is in the sestiere of San Marco, in the centre of the city, and lies between the Campo San Beneto and the Rio di Ca' Michiel. It has a façade onto each, while the northern façade is on the Calle Pesaro. It was built in the fifteenth century by Benedetto Pesaro, member of the prominent , and is one of several palaces of that family in the city.
