Palau–Taiwan Relations
Palau–Taiwan relations are the bilateral relations between Palau and Taiwan. Palau maintains an embassy in Taipei and Taiwan (officially the Republic of China or ROC) maintains an embassy in Koror City. Exchanges between the two nations range from agriculture, culture, education, fishery, medical services, tourism and water supply infrastructure. As of , Palau is one of only 12 United Nations member states to have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. History Palau and Taiwan have had economic and political relations since 1994. In late December 1999, Palau officially established diplomatic relations with the ROC. Taiwan have funded Palauan buildings such as the Palasia Hotel, Palau Royal Resort, Hung Kuo Resort and Papago International Resort. Palau gained its independence October 1, 1994, with the entry into force of the Compact of Free Association with the United States. Palau was the last Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands territories to gain its independence. Under the Compact, the U.S. remains responsible for Palau's defense for 50 years. Palau is a sovereign nation and conducts its own foreign relations. From its independence until July 2019, Palau had established diplomatic relations with over 80 sovereign countries. Palau was admitted to the United Nations on December 15, 1994, and has since joined several other international organizations. Belau Omal Marathon
The Belau Omal Marathon is an annual marathon in Palau. The inaugural edition of the race was held on 4 June 2023. History As a program to stimulate tourism and strengthen Palau–Taiwan relations, coordination and preparation for the Belau Omal Marathon began in 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was delayed until 2023. In February 2023, Palauan officials visited Kinmen to observe its 23rd marathon event. Taiwanese deputy foreign minister Roy Chun Lee announced in Taipei that Taiwan and Palau were jointly hosting the Belau Omal Marathon. Palau High School
Palau High School (PHS) is a senior high school in Koror City, Palau. Opened in 1962, it is the country's only public high school, and the first high school established in Palau. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accredits the school. The United States captured the Palau islands from Japan in 1944, and the Department of the United States Navy setup the school system in 1946, it operated elementary schools on a number of islands for grades 1–6, and opened Palau Intermediate School, in a building left by the Japanese, for the grades 7–9, offering a curriculum of vocational education programs. National Taiwan University
National Taiwan University (NTU; ) is a public research university in Taipei, Taiwan. The university was founded in 1928 during Japanese rule as the seventh of the Imperial Universities. It was named Taihoku Imperial University and served during the period of Japanese colonization. Kuniwo Nakamura
was a Palau, Palauan politician who served as the President of Palau from 1993 to 2001. He had earlier served as Vice President of Palau from 1989 to 1993, under Ngiratkel Etpison. Background and early life Nakamura was the son of a Japanese settlement in Palau, Japanese immigrant from Matsusaka, Mie, Matsusaka, Ise Province and a Palauan chieftain's daughter. The COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan is part of the COVID-19 pandemic, worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 () caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 ().
