Kuniwo Nakamura
was a Palau, Palauan politician who served as the President of Palau from 1993 to 2001. He had earlier served as Vice President of Palau from 1989 to 1993, under Ngiratkel Etpison. Background and early life Nakamura was the son of a Japanese settlement in Palau, Japanese immigrant from Matsusaka, Mie, Matsusaka, Ise Province and a Palauan chieftain's daughter. He was studying in his second year of primary school when the surrender of Japan ended World War II. He graduated from high school under the U.S. occupation of Palau and went on to study at the University of Hawaii. Spouse Elong Nakamura (born 2 May 1944 — 17 November 2018 in Palau) is the wife of President of Palau, President Kuniwo Nakamura. She died in Palau on 17 November 2018 at the age of 74. Congress Of The Trust Territory Of The Pacific Islands
The Congress of Micronesia was a bicameral legislature in Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands from 1964 to 1979. History The Congress was established on 28 September 1964, when the US Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall issued order no. 2882. It replaced the previous Council of Micronesia, which had been based outside the Trust Territory in Guam. The first elections were held in January 1965. The Congress was initially composed of a House of Delegates and General Assembly, which were later renamed the Senate and House of Representatives. The Congress building was burnt down in an arson attack on 20 February 1970. Composition The Senate had 12 members, two from each of the six districts. Peter Lawrence Naoya Sugiyama (April 19, 1943–June 10, 2007) was a Palauan politician. Personal life Sugiyama's father was a Japanese immigrant. He moved to Koror in 1914 at the invitation of his uncle, after the Japanese Empire seized control of the islands as part of its World War I invasion of German New Guinea (which control would later be formalised by the League of Nations as the South Seas Mandate). He began his new life there as a teacher, but would go on to manage a fruit packing company and a cafe. He married Rosang Sayoko Serek, the daughter of a local chieftain. Peter Sugiyama himself was born to Hayato and Rosang on April 19, 1943. Ibedul Yutaka Miller Gibbons (17 January 1944 – 4 November 2021) was a Palauan activist. * * He was the high chief of Koror and the Chairman of the Council of Chiefs. Life Gibbons was born in Palau in 1944. He worked as a United States Army cook before becoming High Chief. He fought against the presence of United States nuclear weapons in Palau. In 1979, a constitution was approved that prohibited the use, testing, storage or disposal of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons in Palau. He won the Right Livelihood Award in 1983. He ran for president in the 1984, 1988 and 1996 Palauan general election. In 1997, he approved the new flag of Koror. He died in a Taiwan hospital on November 4, 2021 at the age of 77. General elections were held in Palau in 1996 to elect a President, Vice-President, Senate and House of Delegates. The first round of the presidential election took place on 24 September, whilst the run-off election and the election for the House of Delegates and Senate took place on 5 November. All candidates ran as independents, with 36 candidates contesting the 14 Senate seats and 35 for the 16 House of Delegates seats Incumbent Kuniwo Nakamura was re-elected President, whilst Thomas Remengesau Jr. was re-elected Vice-President. Voter turnout was 77% in the presidential elections on 24 September and 81% on 5 November.
