Palau Marathon
Palau Marathon is an annual marathon race in the Pacific island state of Palau, which has been organized by the Palau Track and Field Association since 2004. The route varies, in 2017 the marathon started in Ngardmau and led over the Koror-Babeldaob Bridge at 20 miles to the finish on the beach of the Palau Pacific Resort on Ngerekebesang Island. Marathon
The marathon is a long-distance foot race with a distance of , usually run as a road race, but the distance can be covered on trail routes. The marathon can be completed by running or with a run/walk strategy. There are also wheelchair divisions. More than 800 marathons are held throughout the world each year, with the vast majority of competitors being recreational athletes, as larger marathons can have tens of thousands of participants. The marathon was one of the original modern Olympic events in 1896. The distance did not become standardized until 1921. Palau Track And Field Association
The Palau Track and Field Association (PTFA) is the governing body for the sport of athletics in Palau. History Athletes from Palau participated already successful at the 1969 Micronesian Games, (Palau then still being part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands,) and also after re-establishment of the Games in 1990. The foundation of PTFA is reported for 1994, as well as its affiliation to the IAAF in the year 1997. Laura Mangham served as president of PTFA. She was re-elected in October 2003, and in November 2004. Current president is Regis Akitaya. He was elected in February 2008, and re-elected for the period 2012-2016. Ngardmau
Ngardmau is one of Palau's sixteen states and is located on the west side of Babeldaob between the states of Ngaraard and Ngeremlengui. Geography The total area of Ngardmau is . At the time of the 2015 census, 185 people lived in the state. There were 46 households situated in three hamlets: Ngetbong, Ngerutoi and Urdmau. The hamlets have no visible boundaries, but instead form one settlement. Ngardmau is located on the northwest coast of Babeldaob and includes the long drainage basins of the Diongradid and the Irur Rivers. Ngardmau is bordered on the south by Ngeremlengui and on the east by Ngiwal and Ngaraard. The coast is lined with a thick fringe of mangroves. In the interior, rolling hills rise to the highest ground in Palau. Near the upper reaches of the Diongradid is a large waterfall. Ngerekebesang Island
Ngerekebesang Island (alternative names: Ngerekebesang Hamlet, Arakabesan) is an island in the state of Koror, Palau, where the office of the President of the Republic of Palau was located before the capital was moved to the state of Melekeok. It is composed of three towns: Ngerekebesang, Meyuns, and Echang, where most Southwest Islanders moved to after a storm struck the southwest islands. They were later resettled. Belau Omal Marathon
The Belau Omal Marathon is an annual marathon in Palau. The inaugural edition of the race was held on 4 June 2023. History As a program to stimulate tourism and strengthen Palau–Taiwan relations, coordination and preparation for the Belau Omal Marathon began in 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was delayed until 2023. In February 2023, Palauan officials visited Kinmen to observe its 23rd marathon event. Taiwanese deputy foreign minister Roy Chun Lee announced in Taipei that Taiwan and Palau were jointly hosting the Belau Omal Marathon. Attendees of the news conference included Palauan vice president Uduch Sengebau Senior.
