Elias Palairet
Elias Palairet (1713–1765) was a Dutch minister and classical scholar, who spent his later life in England. Life Born in Rotterdam, Palairet was from a Huguenot background. After studying at Leyden he took Protestant holy orders, and became successively preacher at Aardenburg (1741), Doornik (1749), and Tournai. On coming to England Palairet acted as pastor of the French church at Greenwich, and of St. John's Church, Spitalfields, and latterly preacher in the Dutch chapel at St. James's, Westminster. His abilities attracted the notice of Bishop John Egerton, who made him his chaplain. Palairet died in Marylebone on 2 January 1765; he left all his property to his wife Margaret. Jean Palairet
Jean Palairet (1697–1774) was a French cartographer. Life Jean Palairet was born in Montauban, but emigrated to England. He worked as an agent in London for the French States General, and taught French to the children of George II. While working as London agent for Jacob Boreel, Palairet apparently played a part in introducing the game of cricket Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. Lionel Palairet
Lionel Charles Hamilton Palairet (27 May 1870 – 27 March 1933) was an English amateur cricketer who played for Somerset and Oxford University. A graceful right-handed batsman, he was selected to play Test cricket for England twice in 1902. Contemporaries judged Palairet to have one of the most attractive batting styles of the period. His obituary in ''The Times'' described him as "the most beautiful batsman of all time".The Times, Wednesday, 29 Mar 1933; g. 6; Issue 46405; col D. An unwillingness to tour during the English winter limited Palairet's Test appearances; contemporaries believed he deserved more Test caps. Palairet was educated at Repton School. He played in the school cricket team for four years, as captain in the latter two, before going to Oriel College, Oxford. Michael Palairet
Sir Michael Palairet (29 September 1882 – 5 August 1956) was a British diplomat who was minister to Romania, Sweden and Austria, and minister and ambassador to Greece. Early life Palairet was the son of Charles Harvey Palairet, by his marriage to Emily Henry. After his mother's early death, in 1888 his father married secondly Nora Hamilton Martin. Palairet was educated at Ludgrove School and Eton College. He spent time in France and Germany to improve his languages before joining the Diplomatic Service in 1905. Career Palairet was posted to Rome in 1906, Vienna in 1908, Paris in 1913, and Athens in 1917. In 1918 he was posted back to Paris for the Peace Conference. After a brief time in the Foreign Office in London, he returned to Paris in 1920 with the rank of First Secretary. In 1922 he was posted as Counsellor to Tokyo where he and his family survived the Great Kanto earthquake on 1 September 1923, which devastated Tokyo and destroyed the British embassy.
