Pak Khlong Talat
Pak Khlong Talat ( th, ปากคลองตลาด, ;) is a market in Wang Burapha Phirom Subdistrict, Phra Nakhon District, Bangkok, Thailand, that sells flowers, fruits, and vegetables. It is the primary flower market of Bangkok and has been cited as a "place of symbolic value" to Bangkok residents. It is on Chak Phet Road and adjacent side-streets, close to Memorial Bridge. Though the market is open 24 hours, it is busiest before dawn, when boats and trucks arrive with flowers from nearby provinces. Its location by Chao Phraya River near the southern end of Khlong Lot, hence the name 'Pak Khlong Talat', literally means "the market on the mouth of the canal". The Lunar New Year Fair ( zh, t=年宵市場), also known as the flower market ( zh, t=花市), is a type of fair held annually a few days before Lunar New Year in Chinese New Year markets in China. These fairs are primarily practiced by the Cantonese, and spread with Cantonese immigration. History The Lunar New Year Fair's history can be traced back to the Wanli Emperor age of the Ming Dynasty. By this time, peasants sold flowers in markets south of the Pearl River. These ancient flower markets were held every day at no fixed location. In the 1860s, the flower markets began to be held only during Lunar New Year's Eve. A particularly big fair was held in 1919. Bangkok Mass Transit Authority ( th, องค์การขนส่งมวลชนกรุงเทพ), also known as BMTA ( th, ขสมก. ), is the main operator of public transit buses within the Greater Bangkok area. Lonely Planet is a travel guide book publisher. Founded in Australia in 1973, the company has printed over 150 million books. History Early years Lonely Planet was founded by married couple Maureen and Tony Wheeler. In 1972, they embarked on an overland trip through Europe and Asia to Australia, following the route of the Oxford and Cambridge Far Eastern Expedition. The company name originates from the misheard "lovely planet" in a song written by Matthew Moore. Lonely Planet's first book, ''Across Asia on the Cheap'', had 94 pages; it was written by the couple in their home. ''Phuang malai'' ( th, พวงมาลัย, ) or ''malai'' (, ) are a Thai form of floral garland. They are often given as offerings or kept for good luck. Origins Phuang malai may be derived from the Tamil word poo maalai which has the same meaning poo (flowers), maalai (garland).
