William Conselman
William Marien Conselman (July 10, 1896 – May 25, 1940) was an American screenwriter who also wrote newspaper comic strips under his Bill Conselman byline and sometimes under the pseudonym Frank Smiley. Biography Born in Brooklyn, New York, Conselman arrived on the West Coast in 1920 and joined the staff of the ''Los Angeles Times'' as the assistant city editor. His play ''And Then What'', staged by the San Diego Players, opened November 6, 1923 at Balboa Park's Yorick Theater. Between 1921 and 1940, he was a screenwriter on more than 50 films. By 1936, he had an annual income of more than $60,000. In Hollywood, he often collaborated with writer Jack Woodford. Conselman was also a lyricist, and in 1928, he directed the film ''Four A.M.'' Malcolm Stuart Boylan
Malcolm Stuart Boylan (April 13, 1897 – April 3, 1967) was an American screenwriter, writer, and founder of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Screenwriting Boylan entered the entertainment industry as a stage actor while working as a newspaper reporter and publicist at the Los Angeles Express Tribune. He became acquainted with the business of film in the early 1920s when he took the position of director of publicity for Universal and First National. He began supervising a weekly newsreel for Universal. In the early 1920s, he wrote the story line for three short films. Boylan became editorial supervisor for Fox Pictures and, in 1925, he began to create silent-film screen titles for fun. He made a name for himself by writing titles for the 1926 silent version of '' What Price Glory''. Olive Borden
Olive Mary Borden (July 14, 1906 – October 1, 1947) was an American film and stage actress who began her career during the silent film era. She was nicknamed "the Joy Girl", after playing the lead in the 1927 film of that same title. Borden was known for her jet-black hair and stunning overall beauty. At the peak of her career in the mid-1920s, Borden was earning $1,500 a week. In 1927, she walked out on her contract with Fox after refusing to take a pay cut. By 1929, her career began to wane due to her rumored reputation for being temperamental and her difficulty transitioning to sound films. She made her last film, ''Chloe, Love Is Calling You'', in 1934 and moved on to stage work for a time. By the late 1930s, she had declared bankruptcy and stopped acting. Lawrence Gray
Lawrence Gray (July 28, 1898 – February 2, 1970) was an American actor of the 1920s and 1930s. Biography Born in San Francisco in 1898, Gray served during World War I in the U. S. Navy and gained a commission. After the war he began in the technical side of films at the Lasky Studios, but later became an extra in crowd scenes and such, and liking the work, decided on a film career. He appeared in over 40 films between 1925 and 1936, although many were B movies. In 1930, he starred in the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film musical ''Children of Pleasure'', alongside Wynne Gibson, and was also involved with the film score. That same year he also starred in the Vitaphone film musicals '' Sunny'' and ''Spring is Here''. He spent much of his career in vaudeville. He died on February 2, 1970, aged 71, in 1970 in Mexico City. Glen MacWilliams
Glen MacWilliams (May 21, 1898 – April 15, 1984), was an American cinematographer. Biography Born in California, MacWilliams started his career in the silent days. He worked in the United Kingdom for much of the 1930s, working on several musicals with Jessie Matthews. He returned to the US in the 1940s where he worked extensively for 20th Century Fox, filming Laurel and Hardy's first two films for the studio and also worked with Alfred Hitchcock on ''Lifeboat'' in 1944. He had previously worked with Hitchcock on one occasion in Britain. He later worked in television on such shows as ''Highway Patrol'', '' Wanted: Dead or Alive'', ''The Untouchables'' and ''My Living Doll'' before he retired in the mid-1960s. The Fox Film Corporation (also known as Fox Studios) was an American Independent film production studio formed by William Fox (1879–1952) in 1915, by combining his earlier Greater New York Film Rental Company and Box Office Attractions Film Company (founded 1913). The company's first film studios were set up in Fort Lee, New Jersey, but in 1917, William Fox sent Sol M. Wurtzel to Hollywood, California to oversee the studio's new West Coast production facilities, where the climate was more hospitable for filmmaking. On July 23, 1926, the company bought the patents of the Movietone sound system for recording sound onto film. A comedy film is a category of film which emphasizes humor. These films are designed to make the audience laugh through amusement. Films in this style traditionally have a happy ending (black comedy being an exception). Comedy is one of the oldest genres in film and it is derived from the classical comedy in theatre. Some of the earliest silent films were comedies, as slapstick comedy often relies on visual depictions, without requiring sound. When sound films became more prevalent during the 1930s, comedy films took another swing, as laughter could result from burlesque situations but also dialogue.
