Paeonia Corsica
''Paeonia corsica'' is a perennial herbaceous plant of high that belongs to the peonies. It naturally occurs on Corsica, Sardinia, on the Ionian islands and in western Greece. It has hairless green to purple stems, and the lower leaves consist mostly of nine leaflets with undersides which may carry felty hairs or are hairless. Its flowers have pink petals and purple filaments. Its vernacular name in Italian is peonia Corsa, and in French pivoine de Corse, both meaning "Corsican peony". Description The Corsican peony is a diploid species (2n=10). It is a perennial herbaceous photosynthesising plant, which dies down in the autumn and reappears above the surface in spring. Franz Wilhelm Sieber (30 March 1789 – 17 December 1844), was a botanist and collector who travelled to Europe, the Middle East, Southern Africa and Australia. Early life Franz Sieber was born in Prague, Bohemia on 30 March 1789. After 5 years of study at the Gymnasium, endowed with a considerable talent for the graphic arts, he studied architecture, switched to engineering and finally settled on natural history, in particular botany. Expeditions He made several collecting trips to Italy, Crete, Greece, Egypt and Palestine followed by a two-year-long expedition to Australia, Mauritius and South Africa, collecting not only plants, but also animals, art and ethnographic objects. He spent seven months in Sydney (then more usually called Port Jackson) from 1 June 1823 until December 1823 where he collected 645 local plant specimens. The stamen (plural ''stamina'' or ''stamens'') is the pollen-producing reproductive organ of a flower. Collectively the stamens form the androecium., p. 10 Morphology and terminology A stamen typically consists of a stalk called the filament and an anther which contains ''sporangium, microsporangia''. Ernst Huth (27 December 1845, Potsdam – 5 August 1897) was a German naturalist and botanist. He studied mathematics and natural sciences in Berlin, later working as a secondary school teacher in Frankfurt an der Oder. Philip Barker-Webb
Philip Barker Webb (10 July 1793 – 31 August 1854) was an English botanist. Life Webb was born to a wealthy, aristocratic family; his father was the lord of the manors of Witley and Milford, Surrey, Milford, in Surrey, England. Webb was educated at Harrow School and Christ Church, Oxford. He collected plants in Italy, Spain, and Portugal, and was the first person to collect in the Tetuan Mountains of Morocco. En route to Brazil he made what was intended to be a brief visit to the Canary Islands, but he stayed for a considerable time, returning after his Brazil expedition. The results can be seen in the nine-volume ''Natural History of the Canary Islands, Histoire Naturelle des Iles Canaries'' (''Natural History of the Canary Islands''), which he co-authored with Sabin Berthelot. Antonino De Bivona-Bernardi
Antonino (or ''Antonius'') de Bivona-Bernardi (1774 or 24 October 1778 – 1837) was a Sicilian botanist, bryologist and phycologist. He was born in Messina, but was orphaned as a child, and moved to Palermo with the uncle who adopted him. He originally pursued law, but changed his studies to the natural sciences and studied botany under Giuseppe Tineo, director of the Palermo Botanical Garden. After graduating, he travelled to Naples and elsewhere in Italy, making the acquaintance of scientists such as Michele Tenore and Vincenzo Petagna. Professor Francesco Ferrara of Palermo entered a public dispute about deposits had found in Sicily, which he (Antonino), had discovered and thought were fossils. He returned to Palermo upon the death of his uncle, and began to publish botanical works that had great impact in Italy and Europe. Ernest Cosson
Ernest Saint-Charles Cosson (22 July 1819 – 31 December 1889) was a French botanist born in Paris. Cosson is known for his botanical research in North Africa, and during his career he participated in eight trips to Algeria. In several of these he was accompanied by Henri-René Le Tourneux de la Perraudière (1831-1861), whom he honoured in the naming of several species and genera (e.g., ''Perralderia'', ''Galium perralderii''). In 1863 he was elected president of the ''Société botanique de France'', and from 1873 to 1889, he was a member of the ''Académie des sciences''. In 1882 Jules Ferry, as Minister of Public Instruction, decided to create a mission to explore the Regency of Tunisia. Giuseppe Giacinto Moris (25 April 1796, Orbassano – 18 April 1869, Turin) was an Italian botanist known for investigations of flora native to Sardinia. He studied medicine in Turin, from where he graduated while still in his teens. From 1822 to 1829, he worked as a professor at the University of Cagliari, afterwards returning to Turin as a professor at the university. Here, he was director of its botanical garden from 1831 until 1869. He was the binomial authority of the genus '' Ridolfia'' (family Apiaceae) as well as of numerous plant species. The hypocotyl (short for "hypocotyledonous stem", meaning "below seed leaf") is the stem of a germinating seedling, found below the cotyledons (seed leaves) and above the radicle (root). Eudicots As the plant embryo grows at germination, it sends out a shoot called a radicle that becomes the primary root, and then penetrates down into the soil.
