Pacific Regional Workshop On Leadership Development
The Pacific Regional Workshop on Leadership Development was held in Lami, near Suva Suva () is the capital and largest city of Fiji. It is the home of the country's largest metropolitan area and serves as its major port. The Workshop was prepared by the Governance Program at the University of the South Pacific, with financial assistance from NZ Aid. Approximately 60 Participants from more than 14 Pacific countries, having considered the challenges of leadership facing the Pacific region in a variety of sectors, crafted a statement calling the region's leaders to be more attentive to the needs of Pacific People. Lami, Fiji
Lami (), is an urban area in Rewa Province, Fiji, north-west of Suva. It was formally incorporated as a town in 1977, and had a population of 20,529 at the most recent census in 2007. The municipal boundaries enclose an area of 683 square kilometers. The original itaukei inhabitants of Suva were forced to move to Suvavou ("New Suva") by the British colonial powers in 1882 to make room for the new capital of Suva. Located on the outskirts of Lami is the Bilo Battery, which was a key defense built during World War II to help guard the main passage in the reef leading into Suva. Lami is governed by a town council of 12 members, elected for three-year terms, who elect a mayor from among themselves. The mayor's term is for one year, but may be extended indefinitely. Suva () is the capital and largest city of Fiji. It is the home of the country's largest metropolitan area and serves as its major port. The city is located on the southeast coast of the island of Viti Levu, in Rewa Province, Central Division. In 1877, the capital of Fiji was moved to Suva from Levuka, the main European colonial settlement at the time, due to its restrictive geography and environs. The administration of the colony was transferred from Levuka to Suva in 1882. As of the 2017 census, the city of Suva had a population of 93,970, and Suva's metropolitan area, which includes its independent suburbs, had a population of 185,913. The University of the South Pacific (USP) is a public university, public research university with locations spread throughout a dozen countries in Oceania.
