PSA Sportsman Of The Year
The PSA Athlete of the Year is given by the Philippine Sportswriters Association to the best Filipino athletes annually. It is part of the PSA's Annual Awards Night, one of the most prestigious sport-related awards in the Philippines. Boxing
Boxing (also known as "Western boxing" or "pugilism") is a combat sport in which two people, usually wearing protective gloves and other protective equipment such as hand wraps and mouthguards, throw punches at each other for a predetermined amount of time in a boxing ring. Onyok Velasco
Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco Jr. (born January 10, 1974) is a Filipino retired boxer, comedian and actor from Bago, Negros Occidental, Philippines. Competing in the 48 kg category he won a gold medal at the 1994 Asian Games and a silver at the 1996 Summer Olympics, the Philippines' only medal at those Games. Elma Muros
Elma Muros-Posadas (born January 14, 1967, in Magdiwang, Romblon) also known as the "Long Jump Queen" of the Philippines and a heptathlon champion, is a former member of the Philippine Track and Field National Team and now a legend in Philippine track and field history who specialized in long jump. She also competed in the heptathlon, 100m and 400m hurdles, 100m, 200m, and 400m sprint alongside the "Sprint Queen" of the Philippines and also fellow legend, Lydia de Vega. Elma is one of the foremost track and field athletes produced by the Philippines under the Marcos Regime's National Sports Program, Gintong Alay, that was launched in 1979, but was eventually disbanded in 1986 due to the People Power Revolution and the ousting of Ferdinand Marcos. Roberto Jalnaiz (born November 15, 1966) is a retired amateur boxer from the Philippines who is best known for winning his country's only gold medal at the 1990 Asian Games. Competing in the bantamweight (– 54 kg) division, he also represented his native country at the 1988 Summer Olympics and 1992 Summer Olympics. Frankie Miñoza
Francisco "Frankie" Miñoza (born 29 December 1959) is a Filipino professional golfer. Miñoza has played extensively in Asia, winning a number of tournaments on the leading Asian and Japanese tours in addition to many lesser events on the local circuits, especially in the Philippines and Malaysia. In 1990 he won three times on the Asia Golf Circuit and topped the tour's Order of Merit. He spent most of the following years, and had his most notable successes, on the Japan Golf Tour. Luisito Espinosa
Luisito Pio Espinosa (born June 26, 1967) is a Filipino former professional boxer who competed from 1984 to 2005. He is a world champion in two weight classes, having held the WBA bantamweight title from 1989 to 1991 and the WBC featherweight title from 1995 to 1999. Boxing career Espinosa turned professional in 1984. In 1989, he won the WBA Bantamweight title by knocking out Kaokor Galaxy in the first round. Arianne Cerdeña
Arianne Cerdeña (born March 11, 1962) is a Filipino ten-pin bowling player. She is best known for winning the first gold medal for the Philippines in the Summer Olympics; albeit in a demonstration event hence the medal won was not counted in the official medal tally. She won the medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. She is elected to the Philippine Sports Hall of Fame in March 2021. Leopoldo Serrantes
Leopoldo Serantes (March 15, 1962 – September 1, 2021) was a Filipino amateur boxer and soldier. He competed at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea in the Light Flyweight (-48 kg) division, winning the bronze medal in a lost bout against Ivailo Marinov from Bulgaria in the semifinals.
