Pushpa Virendra Ganediwala
Pushpa Virendra Ganediwala (born 11 March 1969) is an Indian lawyer. She was previously an Judge, additional judge of the Bombay High Court, but resigned in 2022, after the Supreme Court of India took the unusual step of refusing to confirm her appointment to the High Court as permanent, after she delivered several controversial judgments concerning cases of sexual assaults against women and children. Early life and education Ganediwala was born in 1969 in Paratwada in Amravati District in Maharashtra. She has B.Com., LL.B, and LL.M degrees. Medical Termination Of Pregnancy Act (1971)
Abortion in India has been legal under various circumstances with the introduction of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, 1971. The Medical Termination of Pregnancy Regulations, 2003 were issued under the Act to enable women to access safe and legal abortion services. In 2021, MTP Amendment Act 2021 was passed with certain amendments to the MTP Act 1971, such as women being allowed to seek safe abortion services on grounds of contraceptive failure, increase in gestation limit to 24 weeks for special categories of women, and opinion of one abortion service provider required up to 20 weeks of gestation. Muzaffarpur Shelter Case
Muzaffarpur Shelter Home Rape case refers to a shelter home that ran under a non-governmental organization called "''Sewa Sankalp Evam Vikas Samiti''" at Muzaffarpur, Bihar, where cases of sexual abuse, rape and torture were reported. In a medical examination, sexual abuse of 34 out of 42 of the girls living at the shelter was confirmed. A first information report was lodged against 12 people on 31 May 2018. Aarambh India
Aarambh India is a non-profit initiative working in Mumbai, India. It focuses on child protection and issues related to child sexual abuse and exploitation. The organization was established in 2012. It partners with other organizations and stakeholders and works across levels from implementing the law of Protection of Children against Sexual Offences (POCSO) on ground to training and workshops, providing care and support to the victims to child sexual abuse research, public education to advocacy. 2014 Badaun Gang Rape Allegations
On 27 May 2014, a gang rape and murder of two teenage girls was reported in the Katra village of Budaun district (also spelled as Badayun), Uttar Pradesh, India. It was widely reported in the press in India as well as overseas. After an extensive investigation, CBI concluded that there was no gang rape and the suspects were released. However, on 28 October 2015 the POCSO court rejected the CBI closure report; it was a major setback for CBI. According to reports, in the evening the girls had gone out into a field that was used for open defecation and did not return. The police were notified, but initially took no action. Villagers searched for the girls throughout the night and they were found the following morning hanging from a tree. 2017 Unnao Rape Case
The Unnao rape case refers to the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl on 4 June 2017 in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, India. On 16 December 2019, former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar was convicted for the rape on 20 December 2019 and sentenced to life imprisonment. Further, Sengar was found guilty in the death of the girl's father in judicial custody. Two chargesheets had been filed in the case. The first charge, filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation on 11 July 2018, accused Sengar, a former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Uttar Pradesh, of the rape. Tulir (NGO)
Tulir - Centre for the Prevention and Healing of Child Sexual Abuse (CPHCSA) is an NGO working on child sexual abuse awareness and rehabilitation, based in Chennai, India. In Tamil, the word ''Tulir'' means the first tender leaves of a plant symbolising children and "the belief in the resilience and resurgence of the human spirit." The NGO is run by Vidya Reddy. Background According to a 2007 study conducted by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, one out of every two children (53.22%) is sexually abused, however, in a conservative society where sex itself is a taboo, sexual abuse of children goes unnoticed and underreported.
