Mathematical induction is a method for proving that a statement ''P''(''n'') is true for every natural number ''n'', that is, that the infinitely many cases ''P''(0), ''P''(1), ''P''(2), ''P''(3), ... all hold. Informal metaphors help to explain this technique, such as falling dominoes or climbing a ladder: A proof by induction consists of two cases. Typical methods for PMI include X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and Optical Emissions Spectrometer, optical emission spectrometry (OES). PMI is a portable method of analysis and can be used in the field on components. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) PMI can not detect small elements such as carbon. The post-mortem interval (PMI) is the time that has elapsed since an individual's death. When the time of death is not known, the interval may be estimated, and so an approximate time of death established. Postmortem interval estimations can range from hours, to days or even years depending on the type of evidence present. There are standard medical and scientific techniques supporting such an estimation.
