PK-17
PK-17 (also known as Firebase Sally) was an Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) and U.S. Marine Corps and Army base located northwest of Huế, Thừa Thiên Province in central Vietnam. History The base was located along Highway 1 at the 17 km mark from the city of Huế. Its name was an abbreviation of the French ''Poste Kilometre 17''. On 30 January 1967 a platoon of 2 M110 howitzers from the 1st 155th Gun Battery moved to PK-17. On 6 April 1967 PK-17 was attacked by People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) forces, resulting in 2 Marines killed and 7 wounded. In January 1968 PK-17 was the base for two battalions of the ARVN 1st Division and one battalion of the Airborne Division. The base played an important role during the Battle of Huế in early 1968. Battle Of Huế
The Battle of Huế (31 January 1968 – 2 March 1968), also called the Siege of Huế, was a major military engagement in the Tết Offensive launched by North Vietnam and the Việt Cộng during the Vietnam War. After initially losing control of most of Huế and its surroundings, the combined South Vietnamese and American forces gradually recaptured the city over one month of intense fighting. The battle was one of the longest and bloodiest of the war, and the battle negatively affected Opposition to United States involvement in the Vietnam War, American public perception of the war. 1st Division (South Vietnam)
The 1st Division of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN)—the army of the nation state of South Vietnam that existed from 1955 to 1975—was part of the I Corps that oversaw the northernmost region of South Vietnam, the centre of Vietnam. The Vietnamese Airborne Division (Binh chủng Nhảy dù Việt Nam Cộng hòa) was one of the earliest components of the Republic of Vietnam Military Forces (Vietnamese language, Vietnamese: ''Quân lực Việt Nam Cộng hòa'' – QLVNCH). The Vietnamese Airborne Division began as companies organized in 1948, prior to any agreement over armed forces in Vietnam. 12th Cavalry Regiment
The 12th Cavalry is a cavalry regiment of the United States Army. History On 2 February 1901, Congress authorized the organization of the Twelfth Regiment of Cavalry, Army of the United States. Under this authority, the regiment was formed at Fort Sam Houston, Texas on 8 February 1901. From 1901 until 1911, the regiment served posts in Texas, Georgia, and the Philippines. During World War II the 12th Cavalry served as an infantry regiment within the 1st Cavalry Division. Huế () is the capital of Thừa Thiên Huế province in central Vietnam and was the capital of Đàng Trong from 1738 to 1775 and of Vietnam during the Nguyễn dynasty from 1802 to 1945. M110 Howitzer
The 8 inch (203 mm) M110 self-propelled howitzer is an American-made self-propelled artillery system consisting of an M115 203 mm howitzer installed on a purpose-built chassis. Before its retirement from US service, it was the largest available self-propelled howitzer in the United States Army's inventory; it continues in service with the armed forces of other countries, to which it was exported. Missions include general support, counter-battery fire, and suppression of enemy air defense systems.
