P. Felix Ganz
P. Felix Ganz (January 23, 1922 – September 5, 1990), of Chicago, Illinois, was a student and collector of postage stamps and postal history as well as an officer of several major philatelic organizations. Collecting interests Ganz was especially noted for his collections of postal history, postal stationery, and postage stamps of Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Andorra. When he exhibited his “Pre-Confederation Switzerland 1748-1848” at philatelic exhibitions in 1979, it was awarded the ''APS Champion of Champions'' classification. Ganz was also interested in other segments of philately, such as philately of U.S. postal stationery, France, Monaco, and Canada. This is a survey of the postage stamps and postal history of Switzerland. History The first stamps used in Switzerland were issued by the cantons of Switzerland, cantons of Canton of Zurich, Zürich (1843), Geneva (1843) and Basel (1845) for their own use, with the first federal issues coming several years later, on April 7, 1850. By March 19, 1798, the Helvetic Republic had come into being; although it was not until September 1798 that the entire country was conquered. According to Napoleon, the country was "liberated" to form itself into a new State, which assumed the title of "Republique Helvetique Une et Indivisible." The American Philatelic Society Hall of Fame award honors deceased philatelists who have contributed significantly to the field of national and/or international philately. History The APS ''Hall of Fame'' award was founded at the 1940 American Philatelic Society Convention. A piece of postal stationery is a stationery item, such as a stamped envelope, letter sheet, postal card, lettercard, aerogram or wrapper, with an imprinted stamp or inscription indicating that a specific rate of postage or related service has been prepaid.
