P.E.O. Sisterhood
The P.E.O. Sisterhood (Philanthropic Educational Organization) is a U.S.-based international women's organization of about 230,000 members, with a primary focus on providing educational opportunities for female students worldwide. The Sisterhood is headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa, with chapters throughout the United States and Canada. Among other projects, it owns and supports Cottey College, an independent college for women in Nevada, Missouri. Iowa Wesleyan University
Iowa Wesleyan University is a private university in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. It is Iowa's first co-educational institution of higher learning and the oldest of its type west of the Mississippi River. The institution is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. It was founded as the Mount Pleasant Literary Institute in 1842, and was known as Mount Pleasant Collegiate Institute from 1843 to 1855, Iowa Wesleyan University from 1855 to 1912, and Iowa Wesleyan College from 1912 to 2015. Jeanette Carolyn Heintzen Lawrence (May 3, 1869 - July 6, 1960) was an American writer and lecturer. Biography Jeanette Carolyn Heintzen was born on May 3, 1869 in Sierra County, California, the daughter of Charles Heintzen, Jr and Sarah V. Busch. Her father was the first banker north of Sacramento in the 1850s. From both father and mother side she was descendant from California pioneers: Charles Heintzen, Sr. drove the stagecoach for Wells Fargo, sometimes hiding the gold from the North Yuba River mines in butter churns on their way to San Francisco, via Marysville; August Busch partnered with Herringlake in establishing the Wells Fargo building in Sierra City. Kate Wetzel Jameson (October 15, 1870 - 1967) was a professor at several colleges and Dean of Women at Montana State University, the University of Arizona and then Oregon State College. Early life Kate Wetzel Jameson was born on October 15, 1870, in Perrysburg, Ohio, the daughter of Jacob Wetzel. She graduated from Perrysburg High School in 1888. She studied in Leipzig, Bonn, and Wuerzburg and obtained an A.B. in 1905 and an M.A. in 1910 from Ohio Wesleyan University and an A.M. in 1914 and a Ph.D. in 1916 from the University of Wisconsin. Iris Pavey Gilmore (1900-1982) was an American writer. She wrote both non-fiction for adults and juveniles. She had a particular interest in Colorado history. Early life Iris Pavey Gilmore was born in Villa Ridge, Illinois, in 1900, the daughter of C. W. B. Pavey. She was educated at Schuster-Martin Dramatic School, in Cincinnati, Ohio, founded by an aunt of the actor Tyrone Power. She received a B.A. in education and drama in 1921 and an M.A. in 1944 from the University of Denver. Career Gilmore was a dramatic teacher and director. Saidie Orr Dunbar (June 23, 1880 – May 13, 1960) was a leading figure in the improvement of public health in Oregon in the early twentieth century. She was very active in social service work and is considered the "founder of public nursing in Oregon". Early life Saidie Orr was born in Granger, Missouri, on June 23, 1880, the daughter of Robert Perry Orr and Catherine Lindsay. Career Saidie Orr Dunbar started her career with the Oregon Tuberculosis Association when she took over the position as executive secretary in 1913. Laura Chenoweth Butz (July 11, 1860 – September 1, 1939) was an American educator. She was the Superintendent of Wardner-Kellogg City Schools for eight years. Early life Laura Ann Chenoweth Butz was born in Danville, Illinois, on July 11, 1860, the daughter of Thomas N. Chenoweth (died 1903). Career Laura Chenoweth Butz was assistant to State Superintendent Research Secretary.
