John Wayne Elementary School (P.S. 380), is an elementary school, located at 370 Marcy Avenue, Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Dedicated in honor of John Wayne on October 28, 1982, "John Wayne Elementary School Day". John Wayne's seven children attended the dedication. Inside the school is a 38-foot mosaic mural commission by New York artist Knox Martin entitled "John Wayne and the American Frontier". Marion Robert Morrison (May 26, 1907 – June 11, 1979), known professionally as John Wayne and nicknamed The Duke or Duke Wayne, was an American actor who became a popular icon through his starring roles in films made during Hollywood's Golden Age, especially in Western and war movies. A mosaic is a pattern or image made of small regular or irregular pieces of colored stone, glass or ceramic, held in place by plaster/mortar, and covering a surface. Mosaics are often used as floor and wall decoration, and were particularly popular in the Ancient Roman world. Knox Martin
Knox Martin (February 12, 1923 – May 15, 2022) was an American painter, sculptor, and muralist. Born in Barranquilla, Colombia, he studied at the Art Students League of New York from 1946 until 1950. He was one of the leading members of the New York School of artists and writers. He lived and worked in New York City. Early life Knox Martin was the oldest son of Lieutenant William Knox Martin, a Virginia-born early aviation pioneer and flyer, and his wife Isabel Vieco, who were married in the Canal Zone in Panama in 1921. Knox Martin Sr., a painter, poet, and early test pilot, was the first man to fly over the Andes mountains. Six years after his marriage, Martin Sr. was fatally injured in an automobile accident in Watertown, New York. Wesley Autrey
Wesley Autrey (born February 6, 1956) (dubbed by the media as the Subway Samaritan, Subway Superman, Hero of Harlem and Subway Hero) is a New York City construction worker and Navy veteran. In 2007, he achieved international recognition when he saved Cameron Hollopeter, a film student who suffered a seizure and fell onto the tracks, from being struck by a New York City Subway train.
