Overskate And Jockey Robin Platts
Overskate (1975–1992) was a Canadian Thoroughbred Sovereign Award, Champion Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, Hall of Fame horse racing, racehorse. Sired by Nodouble out of the dam Overstate who was a descendant of the great Father, sire Princequillo as well as Man o' War (horse), Man o' War, Overskate was foaled at his owner's farm in Port Elgin, Ontario. A small but versatile horse, Overskate raced successfully on grass and dirt racecourses and won major races on rain-soaked sloppy tracks. During his career, he was voted an unprecedented nine Sovereign Awards while racing in Canada and at various tracks in the United States. The colt set track records for 9 furlongs (1 1/8 miles) at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg, Manitoba and for 11 furlongs (1 3/8 miles) on grass, turf at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. The Overskate Stakes is a Canadian Thoroughbred horse race run annually during the latter part of October at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario. An Ontario Sire Stakes, it is a restricted race for horses age three and older. It is currently contested over a distance of furlongs on Woodbine's inner turf course with a purse of C$100,000. Inaugurated in 1997, it is named in honor of Overskate, a Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame horse who holds the record for most Sovereign Award with nine. The Bernard Baruch Handicap is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for three-years-old and older run over a distance of miles on the turf annually in early August at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. The event currently offers a purse of $200,000. History The event is named in honor of Bernard Baruch who was a statesman, an adviser to various Presidents of the United States, and a lover of horses, thoroughbred horse racing, and the life of America's racetracks. The inaugural running of the event was on 12 August 1959 as the Bernard Baruch Stakes for three year old horses over a distance of miles on the dirt and was won by Middle Brother, ridden by Bobby Ussery defeating Howard B. Sovereign Award For Horse Of The Year
The Canadian Horse of the Year is a thoroughbred horse racing honour given annually since 1951 by the Jockey Club of Canada. It is the most prestigious honour in Canadian thoroughbred horse racing. Part of the Sovereign Awards program since 1975, it is similar to the Eclipse Award for American Horse of the Year honours given in the United States. The original eligibility rules stipulated that the winner be a Canadian-bred horse that did its "best running" in Canada. In 1964, the rule was altered for Northern Dancer, who was a Canadian-bred but whose most notable wins came in the United States when he won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Eventually the requirement that the horse be a Canadian-bred was also dropped. The current rules simply require that the horse have raced at least three times in Canada during the given year (two times for two-year-olds). Jacques Cartier Stakes
The Jacques Cartier Stakes is a Thoroughbred horse race run annually since 1954 at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Run near the beginning of the Woodbine spring meeting, the sprint race is open to horses aged four and older and is run over a distance of six furlongs on Tapeta synthetic dirt. In 2019, it became a Grade III stakes race and the purse was increased to Can$125,000 with an additional $25,000 available for Ontario-bred horses. Inaugurated in 1954 at the now defunct Greenwood Raceway in Toronto, the Jacques Cartier Stakes is named in honour of the French explorer, Jacques Cartier. It was raced at Woodbine Racetrack from 1956 through 1967 after which it was hosted by Fort Erie Racetrack through 1975. In 1976 the race returned to Greenwood Raceway where it remained through 1993. Bowling Green Handicap
The Bowling Green Stakes is a Grade II American thoroughbred horse race for horses age four years old and older over a distance of miles on the turf held annually in late July at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. History The inaugural running of the event was on 11 June 1958 at Belmont Park as the sixth event on the card that day and was won by the French bred horse, Rafty trained by the US Hall of Fame trainer Hollie Hughes in a time of 2:17. The event is named for the area on the lower tip of Manhattan Island, known as Bowling Green. In 1963 the event was moved to Aqueduct Racecourse and the distance was increased to 13 furlongs ( miles). Gil Rowntree
Gil H. Rowntree (born January 17, 1934, in Toronto, Ontario) is a Canadian Hall of Fame Thoroughbred racehorse trainer and owner. One of the most successful trainers in Canadian Thoroughbred racing history, Rowntree embarked on his racing career as a jockey in his native Toronto, riding from 1949 through 1951. As a trainer, he learned his conditioning skills as an assistant to Hall of Fame trainer and Kentucky Derby winner, Lou Cavalaris, Jr. Rowntree obtained his trainer's licence in 1959 and was hired by Stafford Farms in 196where he remained until the death of owner John H. Stafford, Jack Stafford in 1981. During his training career, Gil Rowntree won eight Canadian Classic Races and following the creation of the Sovereign Awards program in 1975 he was voted the first-ever winner as Canada's Outstanding Trainer. The Sky Classic Stakes is a Graded stakes race, Grade II Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Canadian Maturity Stakes
The Canadian Maturity Stakes was a Canadian Thoroughbred horse race run annually in late November at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario. Inaugurated in 1953, the race was restricted to four-year-old horses bred in Canada. It was contested on turf over a distance of a mile and a quarter (10 furlongs). At a time when Thoroughbreds regularly ran on both dirt and turf, the Canadian Maturity Stakes attracted the best four-year-olds in Canada. However, by the late 1980s that situation had changed dramatically and by the time of the 1994 running, it attracted a field of only four horses. The Canadian Maturity Stakes was won for five consecutive years between 1990 and 1994 by Sam-Son Farm and Hall of Fame trainer, Jim Day. Sam-Son Farm and Day also won in 1983.
