Overland (film)
''Overland'' is a 2020 documentary film about falconry, directed and written by Elisabeth Haviland James and Revere La Noue. ''Overland'' follows the life of three different persons that share their passion for falconry: Giovanni Granati, a divorced father living in a farmhouse in Abruzzo; anthropologist Lauren McGough from Oklahoma, who spent two years with Kazakh nomads in western Mongolia; and an employee of the Crown Prince of Dubai, Khalifa Bin Mujren, who breeds some of the fastest falcons in the world. The documentary took five years to produce and was filmed on four continents. A documentary film or documentary is a non-fictional film, motion-picture intended to "document reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction, education or maintaining a Recorded history, historical record". Falconry
Falconry is the hunting of wild animals in their natural state and habitat by means of a trained bird of prey. Small animals are hunted; squirrels and rabbits often fall prey to these birds. Two traditional terms are used to describe a person involved in falconry: a "falconer" flies a falcon; an "austringer" (Old French origin) flies a hawk (''Accipiter'', some buteos and similar) or an eagle ('' Aquila'' or similar). In modern falconry, the red-tailed hawk (''Buteo jamaicensis''), Harris's hawk (''Parabuteo unicinctus''), and the peregrine falcon (''Falco perigrinus'') are some of the more commonly used birds of prey. Revere La Noue
Revere La Noue (born October 20, 1976) is an American artist, filmmaker and entrepreneur. He has developed extensive collections of work in art, film and experimental media. In 2010, he founded The Mascot Gallery, an online resource and store featuring a range of artwork and film about America's great icons with impressionistic depictions of their often forgotten origins. In 2012, he launched a two-story studio and exhibition space on Main Street in Durham, North Carolina. Life and career Born in Baltimore, Maryland on the bicentennial of American Independence, La Noue was named after artisan and revolutionary Paul Revere. He earned a bachelor's degree from the College of Arts and Letters at the University of Notre Dame where he played on the lacrosse team. International Wildlife Film Festival
The International Wildlife Film Festival is a film festival held annually at the Roxy Theater in Missoula, Montana. The International Wildlife Film Festival was "the first regular ongoing festival devoted solely to wildlife films" and this "signaled that wildlife films had arrived as a motion picture genre distinct from others". It is a juried event that lasts eight days and "involves the world's top wildlife filmmakers, producers, scientists and conservation leaders", and up to 12,000 people attend. The festival, which was "founded by internationally known bear biologist Dr. Charles Jonkel in 1977, recognizes scientific accuracy, artistic appeal, and technical excellence". Santa Barbara International Film Festival
The Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) is an eleven-day film festival held in Santa Barbara, California since 1986. The festival boasts screenings of over 200 feature films and shorts from different countries and regions. SBIFF also includes celebrity tributes, industry panels and education programs. History Over the years, SBIFF has invited numerous potential award-winning celebrities, including Cate Blanchett, Guillermo Del Toro, Laura Dern, Leonardo DiCaprio, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence, Heath Ledger, Eddie Redmayne, Martin Scorsese, and Kate Winslet. Chagrin Documentary Film Festival
Chagrin Documentary Film Festival is an annual documentary film festival based in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. The festival debuted in 2010, with 93 films showing in venues throughout the village. That year, the festival had an attendance of 1,800. By the 2015 festival, that number had grown to almost 7,000, while the number of films shrank to less than 70. The festival currently has an all-volunteer staff. History The festival's director is Mary Ann Quinn Ponce, who founded the festival in 2010 in honor of her son, filmmaker David Ponce.
