Our Lady Of Perpetual Help Cathedral, Niamey
The Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral (french: Cathédrale Notre-Dame du Perpétuel Secours de Niamey) or simply Cathedral of Niamey, is a religious building of the Catholic Church located in Niamey, the capital city of the African country of Niger. The temple began as a parish church in 1931, in May 1948 adopted its current name of Perpetual Help. Follow the Roman or Latin rite and functions as the headquarters of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Niamey (''Archidioecesis Niameyensis'') which was created in 2007 by Pope Benedict XVI through the bull ''"Cum Ecclesia Catholica"''. In January 2015 an important safety device in the cathedral after several churches were attacked by Muslim radicals as a consequence of the publication of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo was deployed. Niamey () is the capital and largest city of Niger. Niamey lies on the Niger River, primarily situated on the east bank. Niamey's population was counted as 1,026,848 as of the 2012 census. Our Lady of Perpetual Help (also known as Our Lady of Perpetual Succour) is a Roman Catholic title of the Blessed Virgin Mary associated with a 15th-century Byzantine icon with an alleged Marian apparition. The icon is believed to have originated from the Keras Kardiotissas Monastery and has been in Rome since 1499. The Catholic Church in Niger is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope in Rome. In 2005 there were approximately 16,000 Catholics in Niger. They were based in two dioceses: the Diocese of Maradi (approximately 1,000) and the much larger Diocese of Niamey (approximately 15,000). In 2020, figures showed that 0.09% of the country's population was Catholic. In the same year, 61 priests and 88 nuns served across 25 parishes.
