Our Lady And St Brigid's Church, Northfield
The Church of Our Lady and St Brigid, Northfield is a Roman Catholic parish church in Northfield, Birmingham. History A mission was established in 1918 in Steel Road. In 1921 it was called St Bride and the priest, George Mesher had three boarders, Frank Warwick and his family. In 1930 land was acquired and a temporary church was erected in 1931. The current building was erected in 1936 to the designs of the architect Ernest Bower Norris. The church is of red brick with a clerestories nave with aisles, a chancel and south chapel. The bell tower is above the south west porch. The church contains a large mural of the Resurrection which was painted by Neil Harvey and completed in 2000. Organ The church contained an organ by Harris Organ Ltd. A specification of the organ can be found on the National Pipe Organ Register. Northfield, Birmingham
Northfield is a residential area in outer south Birmingham, England, and near the boundary with Worcestershire. It is also a council constituency, managed by its own district committee. The constituency includes the wards of Kings Norton, Longbridge, Weoley Castle and the smaller ward of Northfield that includes West Heath and Turves Green. Mentioned in the Domesday Book and formerly a small village, then included in north Worcestershire, Northfield became part of Birmingham in 1911 after it had been rapidly expanded and developed in the period prior to World War I. Saint Brigid of Kildare or Brigid of Ireland ( ga, Naomh BrÃd; la, Brigida; 525) is the patroness saint (or 'mother saint') of Ireland, and one of its three national saints along with Patrick and Columba. Ernest Bower Norris
Ernest Bower Norris, was a prolific architect practising mostly in the north-west of England. His style fused modern, traditional and international influences, although in his ecclesiastical work he often favoured neo-byzantine or romanesque. A review of his work published in 1938 said that he had designed 80 schools and over 40 churches. At this stage he was mid-career and continued practising for a further 30 years. His buildings are predominantly brick, although often with steel or concrete structural support. Early life Ernest Bower Norris was born in Didsbury, Manchester in 1889. His father was James Higginbotham Norris and his mother Ellen Frances Bower. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Birmingham is one of the principal Latin-rite Catholic administrative divisions of England and Wales in the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church.
