Friedrich Rückert
Friedrich Rückert (16 May 1788 – 31 January 1866) was a German poet, translator, and professor of Oriental languages. Biography Rückert was born in Schweinfurt and was the eldest son of a lawyer. He was educated at the local '' Gymnasium'' and at the universities of Würzburg and Heidelberg. From 1816 to 1817, he worked on the editorial staff of the ''Morgenblatt'' at Stuttgart. Nearly the whole of the year 1818 he spent in Rome, and afterwards he lived for several years at Coburg (1820–1826). Rückert married Luise Wiethaus-Fischer there in 1821. He was appointed a professor of Oriental languages at the University of Erlangen in 1826, and, in 1841, he was called to a similar position in Berlin, where he was also made a privy councillor. In 1849 he resigned his professorship at Berlin, and went to live full-time in his ''Gut'' (estate) at Neuses (now a part of Coburg). Heinrich Sutermeister (12 August 1910 – 16 March 1995) was a Swiss composer, most famous for his opera ''Romeo und Julia''. Life and career Sutermeister was born in Feuerthalen. During the early 1930s he was a student at the Akademie der Tonkunst in Munich, where Carl Orff was his teacher. Orff thereafter remained a powerful influence on his music. Returning to Switzerland in the mid-1930s, Sutermeister devoted his life to composition. He wrote some works for the radio, starting with '' Die schwarze Spinne'' in 1936, before turning later to television opera. His most successful stage work was ''Romeo und Julia'', premiered in Dresden in 1940 under Karl Böhm. Sutermeister's penultimate stage work, ''Madame Bovary'', first given in Zurich in 1967, is loosely based on Flaubert's novel. Werner Sutermeister (1868–1939) is a Swiss writer well known for his spoonerisms. Life Werner Sutermeister was a son of Ernestine Moehrlen and Otto Sutermeister. attended Gymnasium Kirchenfeld in Bern. He then studied history, German philology and philosophy in Basel, Leipzig and Bern. In 1891 he became a teacher for secondary schools. 1894 he promoted with a dissertation about Klemens von Metternich’s relationship to Switzerland between 1840 and 1848. For six years he worked as a teacher at the girls' school of Bern. In the spring of 1900 he was elected to the Gymnasium of Bern, where he taught History and German for 37 years.
