Otter Rapids, Ontario
Otter Rapids, also known as White Otter Rapids, is an unincorporated place and dispersed rural community in geographic Pitt Township in the Unorganized North Part of Cochrane District in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It is located 148.9 km south of Moosonee and 120 km north of Smooth Rock Falls. The community is on the west side (left bank) of the Abitibi River adjacent to the Otter Rapids Generating Station, downstream of the Abitibi Canyon Generating Station and community of Abitibi Canyon, and upstream of Coral Rapids. Transportation The Ontario Northland Railway runs through this community. Otter Rapids is also accessible by a gravel road that connects via Abitibi Canyon to Ontario Highway 634 at Fraserdale, and by an airstrip suitable for small aircraft. Moosonee
Moosonee () is a town in northern Ontario, Canada, on the Moose River approximately south of James Bay. It is considered to be "the Gateway to the Arctic" and has Ontario's only saltwater port. Nearby on Moose Factory Island is the community of Moose Factory to which it is connected by water taxi in the summer and ice road in the winter. There is no road connection to the community but flights are provided by Air Creebec and by Thunder Airlines. Moosonee is also the railhead of the Ontario Northland Railway where goods are transferred to barges and aircraft for transport to more northerly communities. Moosonee is not particularly far north, being located at 51°N—which is roughly the same latitude as Saskatoon, Calgary, London (UK), and Berlin—but is colder due to its proximity to Hudson Bay, and isolated due to its lack of road access to the rest of Ontario. Moose Factory, Ontario
Moose Factory is a community in the Cochrane District, Ontario, Canada. It is located on Moose Factory Island, near the mouth of the Moose River, which is at the southern end of James Bay. It was the first English-speaking settlement in lands now making up Ontario and the second Hudson's Bay Company post to be set up in North America after Fort Rupert. On the mainland, across the Moose River, is the nearby community of Moosonee, which is accessible by water taxi in the summer, ice road in the winter, and chartered helicopter in the off-season (break-up or freeze-up). A private company also offers freighter-canoe ferry service across the Moose River. Wetum Road
Wetum Road is a Winter road servicing the Moose Cree First Nation in Northern Ontario. The road is named for local councillors Peter Wesley (We) and Robert Echum or Robert Tum (tum). The road is approximately long from Otter Rapids, Ontario to Moose Factory 68 just outside Moose Factory. The south end then connects to Ontario Highway 634 in Fraserdale, Ontario to Smooth Rock Falls, Ontario where it connections to Ontario Highway 11 on to either Thunder Bay, Ontario or south to Toronto via Ontario Highway 400. The road provides a key route to connect remote communities with areas to the south. Maintained annually since 2013, the road's construction and use depends on the weather each winter. Fraserdale is an unincorporated place and railroad point in Unorganized Cochrane, North Part in Cochrane District, Northern Ontario, Canada. It is located north of Timmins along the Ontario Northland Railway. The community/train stop was named for Alan Fraser, a railway engineer, and is counted as part of Unorganized Cochrane, North Part in Canadian census data. The neighbouring community Abitibi Canyon ( east) on the Abitibi River was the most extensive community ever built by the Ontario Hydro Electric Power Commission. It was home to 1500 residents and was established to house employees of Abitibi Canyon Generating Station. Secondary Highway 634, commonly referred to as Highway 634, is a remote highway in Northern Ontario that connects Ontario Highway 11, Highway 11 in Smooth Rock Falls, Ontario, Smooth Rock Falls to the Abitibi Canyon Generating Station in the community of Abitibi Canyon, Ontario. It is the second highway in Ontario to be designated Highway 634, with the original Highway 634 being near Greater Sudbury, Sudbury. The current routing was at first designated as Ontario Highway 807, Highway 807, but was renumbered in 1977. The road was re-aligned around the eastern part of Smooth Rock Falls in the mid-1990s. Ontario Northland Railway
The Ontario Northland Railway is a Canadian railway operated by the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission, a provincial Crown agency of the government of Ontario. Originally built to develop the Lake Timiskaming and Lake Nipissing areas, the railway soon became a major factor in the economic growth of the province. After decades of difficult construction through the Canadian Shield, workers reached James Bay in 1932. While blasting the route through the shield, geologists discovered deposits of valuable minerals such as gold, silver, copper and nickel. Abitibi Canyon, Ontario
Abitibi Canyon was a community on the Abitibi River in northeastern Ontario, Canada. Abitibi Canyon was part of Northern Unorganized Cochrane District, in Cochrane District. It was located northeast of Fraserdale. History The construction of the Abitibi Canyon Generating Station at Abitibi Canyon began in 1930 for the Ontario Power Service Corporation, a subsidiary of the Abitibi Power and Paper Company, today's Resolute Forest Products. Work was suspended several years later, the company went into receivership and the project was taken over by the provincial Ontario Hydro in 1933. The Abitibi Canyon settlement was established in 1930 to support the construction of the dam. Abitibi Canyon Generating Station
Abitibi Canyon Generating Station is a hydroelectric power plant owned by Ontario Power Generation on the Abitibi River. The station is located 80 km north of Smooth Rock Falls, within Pitt Township in Northern Unorganized Cochrane District, in Ontario, Canada. This facility is the fifth downstream hydroelectric plant of six on the Abitibi River. Designed by George F. Hardy Company, the construction of this 349 MW facility began in 1930 and became fully operational in 1936. Hydro One has a 500 kV transmission line along with a 230 kV line that runs south to Sudbury and continues all the way to Toronto to interconnect with the rest of the 500 kV network in Ontario. Otter Rapids Generating Station
Otter Rapids Generating Station is a dam and hydroelectric power plant located in Pitt Township in the Unorganized North Part of Cochrane District in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. Owned by Ontario Power Generation, this 4-unit, 182 MW station is part of the Northeast Plant Group. The Ontario Northland Railway runs past this facility. Preliminary surveys of the site were conducted in 1945. In 1951 additional site information was gathered with studies and estimates refined. Approval under the Navigable Waters Protection Act was received in October 1958 and the first generating unit came online on September 26, 1961. The Otter Rapids Generating Station was the last of four generating stations completed on the Abitibi River in the James Bay watershed.
