Ottawa South (provincial Electoral District)
Ottawa South (french: Ottawa-Sud) is a provincial electoral district (''riding'') in the Canadian province of Ontario, in the city of Ottawa. History The district was created in 1925 from part of Ottawa West. Prior to the 1999 election, the provincial district did not have the same borders as the federal district. Prior to the 1967 redistribution, the riding shared no common area with the present riding. Present day Ottawa South could be found in the riding of Russell prior to 1967. After having been firmly conservative for the first 60 years, it has been in the hands of the Liberals without interruption since 1987. John Fraser (Ontario MPP)
John P. Fraser (born ) is a Canadian politician who currently serves as the interim leader of the Ontario Liberal Party. Fraser previously served as interim leader from June 2018 to March 2020. Fraser is the member of provincial parliament (MPP) for Ottawa South and was first elected in a by-election on August 1, 2013. Following the resignation of Kathleen Wynne as party leader after the party's poor performance in the 2018 election, he was unanimously endorsed by the other six remaining Liberal MPPs to become interim leader on June 13, 2018 and unanimously elected the next day by a vote of the party executive and riding association presidents. After Steven Del Duca was elected Liberal leader on March 7, 2020, Fraser remained the party's parliamentary leader as Del Duca didn't have a seat in the legislature. Wellington Ward
Wellington Ward was one of the original five wards of the city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada created in 1855 from West Ward in Bytown, Upper Canada. It existed until 1994 when it was amalgamated with Dalhousie Ward to become Somerset Ward. The original ward consisted of the city west of the Rideau Canal and south of Wellington Street. It has traditionally consisted of Ottawa's Centretown and Downtown neighbourhoods. Capital Ward or Ward 17 (French: ''Quartier Capitale'') is a city ward located in the centre of Ottawa, Ontario. Situated just south of downtown Ottawa, the ward includes the communities of Old Ottawa East, Old Ottawa South, the Glebe, Heron Park, Carleton University, and Riverside Out of all the wards currently in existence, Capital ward has existed the longest. Wellington Street West
Wellington Street West is a 2.3 km road and shopping area west of downtown Ottawa, Ontario. This road was once connected to - and is often confused with - the prominent Wellington Street in downtown Ottawa. But the two Wellingtons were severed in the 1960s with the expropriation of LeBreton Flats and the demolition of the viaduct that connected them over the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks. A small remnant of the old Wellington alignment remains between Bayview Road and the small park, Somerset Square. But the modern Wellington Street West roadway is now connected with Somerset Street West, which becomes Wellington West at Garland Avenue. Centretown
Centretown is a neighbourhood in Somerset Ward, in central Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is defined by the city as "the area bounded on the north by Gloucester Street and Lisgar Street, on the east by the Rideau Canal, on the south by the Queensway freeway and on the west by Bronson Avenue." Traditionally it was all of Ottawa west of the Rideau Canal, while Lower Town was everything to the east. The Glebe is a neighbourhood in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is located just south of Ottawa's downtown area in the Capital Ward. According to the Glebe Community Association, the neighbourhood is bounded on the north by the Queensway, on the east and south by the Rideau Canal and on the west by LeBreton Street South, Carling Avenue and Dow's Lake. Old Ottawa South is an older urban neighbourhood in Capital Ward in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Old Ottawa South is a relatively small and compact neighbourhood, located between the Rideau Canal (to the north) and the Rideau River (to the south). The eastern boundary is Avenue Road. Bronson Avenue forms the western border of the residential neighbourhood. Carleton University is on the other (western) side of Bronson but the campus can be considered to be geographically within Old Ottawa South as the campus is also nestled between the river and the canal.
