Osmond, Newfoundland And Labrador
Osmond is an unincorporated place in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The settlement was a stop on the Newfoundland Railway. History By the late 1800s, the coastal area between Cape Ray, Newfoundland and Labrador, Cape Ray and Grand Bay West was occupied by about 100 settlers living in the tiny scattered communities of Big Barachois, Cape Barrisway (or Barachois Point), Dreadfall Point, Jerrett Point, Middle Barachois, Point Rosy, and Rocky Barachois. The settlers fished for cod in the local waters, and established farms, selling vegetables to fishing communities along the southwest coast of Newfoundland. After the Newfoundland Railway went through in 1897, the people in these settlements began moving closer to communities nearer the tracks, and by about 1930, most had resettled to a location near a railway siding at Barachois Point, which was renamed "Osmond" after a local family. Newfoundland Railway
The Newfoundland Railway operated on the island of Newfoundland from 1898 to 1988. With a total track length of , it was the longest narrow-gauge railway system in North America. Cape Ray, Newfoundland And Labrador
Cape Ray is a local service district and designated place in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is on the southwest coast of the island of Newfoundland. History Cape Ray, the cape located near the community was the terminus for the overland portion of the transatlantic telegraph cable from St. John's to Cape Ray. From here the cable then takes a submarine route to Cape Breton Island. The area is also known for its discovery of Dorset Paleoeskimo artifacts. Port Aux Basques
Channel-Port aux Basques is a town at the extreme southwestern tip of Newfoundland (island), Newfoundland fronting on the western end of the Cabot Strait. A Marine Atlantic ferry terminal is located in the town which is the primary entry point onto the island of Newfoundland and the western terminus of the Newfoundland and Labrador Route 1 (Trans-Canada Highway) in the province. The town was incorporated in 1945 and its population in the 2021 census was 3,547. Cabot Strait
Cabot Strait (; french: détroit de Cabot, ) is a strait in eastern Canada approximately 110 kilometres wide between Cape Ray, Newfoundland and Cape North, Cape Breton Island. It is the widest of the three outlets for the Gulf of Saint Lawrence into the Atlantic Ocean, the others being the Strait of Belle Isle and Strait of Canso. It is named for the italian explorer Giovanni Caboto. The strait's bathymetry is varied, with the Laurentian Channel creating a deep trench through its centre, and comparatively shallow coastal waters closer to Newfoundland and Cape Breton Island. These bathymetric conditions have been known by mariners to cause rogue waves. The steep slope of the Laurentian Channel was the site of a disastrous submarine landslide at the southeastern end of the strait, triggered by the 1929 Grand Banks earthquake and leading to a tsunami that devastated communities along Newfoundland's south coast and parts of Cape Breton Island.
