Osman Orsal
Osman Orsal is a Turkish photo-journalist for the international news agency Reuters. Orsal resides in Istanbul, Turkey. On 28 May 2013, Orsal covered the 2013 protests in Turkey, capturing an iconic set of images of the protests. The images show a young protester (later nicknamed the "woman in red"), a young woman in a red dress, as she stands her ground while she is sprayed by a policeman. Photojournalism is journalism that uses images to tell a news story. It usually only refers to still images, but can also refer to video used in broadcast journalism. Reuters ( ) is a news agency owned by Thomson Reuters Corporation. It employs around 2,500 journalists and 600 photojournalists in about 200 locations worldwide. 2013 Protests In Turkey
A wave of demonstrations and civil unrest in Turkey began on 28 May 2013, initially to contest the urban development plan for Istanbul's Taksim Gezi Park. The protests were sparked by outrage at the violent eviction of a sit-in at the park protesting the plan. Subsequently, supporting protests and strikes took place across Turkey, protesting against a wide range of concerns at the core of which were issues of freedom of the press, of expression and of assembly, as well as the alleged political Islamist government's erosion of Turkey's secularism.
