Stortorvet
Stortorvet ('The Grand Plaza') is a square in Oslo, Norway, located west of Oslo Cathedral. Background It was officially inaugurated during the autarchic times, in 1736. A town market was held here until 1889. Marketing still exists, but has largely been moved to Youngstorget. The building that houses the restaurant Stortorvets Gjæstgiveri is a Norwegian Cultural Heritage Site. Other buildings surrounding the square are business buildings such as GlasMagasinet and the main entrance of the Oslo Cathedral. Stortorvet was located on the outskirts of the part of the capital that was founded by King Christian IV, Christiania. A bronze statue of the king pointing is located in the square, entitled "here the city is to be". The square became an important hub for public transportation with the introduction of the tramway. Fredrikstad
Fredrikstad (; previously ''Frederiksstad''; literally "Fredrik's Town") is a city and municipality in Viken county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the city of Fredrikstad. The city of Fredrikstad was founded in 1567 by King Frederick II, and established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see '' formannskapsdistrikt''). The rural municipality of Glemmen was merged with Fredrikstad on 1 January 1964. The rural municipalities of Borge, Onsøy, Kråkerøy, and Rolvsøy were merged with Fredrikstad on 1 January 1994. Hugo Lous Mohr (27 September 1889 – 20 February 1970) was a Norwegian painter. Biography He was born in Mandal in Vest-Agder, Norway. He was the son of Olaf Eugen Mohr (1856–1933) and Jeanette Lous (1860–1942). His father was a vicar at the missionary school operated by the Norwegian Missionary Society in Stavanger. He was a brother of architect Bjarne Lous Mohr and physician Otto Lous Mohr, and brother-in-law of physician Tove Mohr. He graduated from Stavanger Cathedral School in Kongsgård during 1907. He was a student of artist Henrik Sørensen in Kristiania (now Oslo) from 1916-18. Arrigo Minerbi (10 February 1881 – 9 May 1960) was an Italian sculptor. Life Born to a Jewish family in Ferrara on 10 February 1881, he took a course in arts and crafts before working as a ceramicist, designer, teacher and stucco-artist in Florence, Ferrara and Genoa (in this period he produced a gigantic "Neptune" in iron and cement in 1910 at Monterosso al Mare, and other fountains in Genoa). Aged 35 he moved to Milan where, in 1919, he put on an exhibition of his work to the critics and the public in the Galleria Pesaro. Emanuel Vigeland (2 December 1875 – 22 December 1948) was a multitalented Norwegian artist. He is known for a variety of decorations of Scandinavian churches and for ''Tomba Emmanuelle'', his mausoleum at Slemdal in Oslo. His elder brother was sculptor, Gustav Vigeland. Karl Johans Gate
Karl Johans gate is the main street of the city of Oslo, Norway. The street was named in honor of King Charles III John, who was also King of Sweden as Charles XIV John. Karl Johans gate is a composite of several older streets that used to be separate thoroughfares. The eastern section was part of Christian IV's original city near the ramparts surrounding the city. When the ramparts were removed to make way for Oslo Cathedral, three separate sections eventually became ''Østre Gade''. The wider western section was built during the 1840s as an avenue connecting the newly erected Norwegian Royal Palace with the rest of the city. Andreas Friedrich Wilhelm von Hanno (15 December 1826 – 12 December 1882) was a German-born Norwegian architect, sculptor and painter. He was among the leading architects in Norway during the middle of the 1800s. Biography Wilhelm von Hanno was born in Hamburg, Germany. Heinrich Ernst Schirmer (27 August 1814 – 6 December 1887) was a German-born architect most noted for his work in Norway. Schirmer worked in Norway from 1838 to 1883 and left his mark on a number of public buildings. He contributed significantly to the introduction of the so-called Swiss architectural style in Norway, based partly on Italian villa style, Gothic Revival, and neoclassicism.
