Oscarsteatern (English: Oscar Theatre), also known simply as Oscars, is one of Stockholm's private theatres and is the best-known musical theatre in Sweden. It is located at Kungsgatan 63 in central Stockholm. History The theater was designed in Art Nouveau by architect Axel Anderberg (1860–1937) and was inaugurated on December 6, 1906. It was named after King Oscar II. The salon accommodated 1175 seats and was decorated with white stucco and gilded ornaments. Between 1971-1974, the theater was closed for renovation and at the same time the salon was restored. The opening production was ''Frihetsbröderna (Les brigands)'' by Jacques Offenbach, on 6 December the same year. The theatre has during the years been seen as the foremost stage for musical productions and operettas in Sweden. Rosa Grünberg
Rosalie "Rosa" Grünberg (4 January 1878 – 11 April 1960) was a Swedish actress and opera soprano singer. She was considered one of the Swedish opera scene's prima donnas. Biography The Stockholm-born Grünberg was one of the noted prima donnas of the Swedish opera scene in the beginning of the 1900s. She made her play stage debut in 1898 in ''Bröllopet på Ulvåsa'' at the Svenska Teatern. Later, she worked in that venue and other theaters owned by Albert Ranft until 1915. Amongst her performances was a role in the play ''Frihetsbröderna'', which was the opening show for the Oscarsteatern at its launch in 1906. She made her opera stage debut in ''Tosca'' in 1914 at Kungliga Operan in Stockholm. She also had operatic roles as Mimosa San in ''Geishan'', as Rosalinda in ''Läderlappen'', and as Angèle in ''Greven av Luxemburg''. ''Vicky'' Lillemor Birgitta von der Lancken, (born ''Lillemor Lindberg'', 4 July 1942) is a Swedish entertainment producer and theater director. Career Vicky von der Lanckens career started in 1971, she became involved in the Yrkes-trubadurernas förening (YTF). Albert Ranft
Albert Adam Ranft (23 November 1858 – 5 October 1938) was a Swedish theatre director and actor. Biography Albert Adam Ranft was born in Stockholm, the son of Adolf Fredrik Ranft and Katarina Amalia Reijhell. His brother Gustaf Adolf Ranft (1856–1929) was also an actor. Ranft debuted in the theatre company of Danish actress Magda von Dolcke (1838–1926) in Örebro during 1876. He was involved in various amusing theater companies until 1884 when he started his own travelling company. Ranft was engaged from 1886–1890 as director and actor at Stora Teatern in Gothenburg and with Hjalmar Selander (1859–1928) in 1890–1892. He ran a traveling theater company from 1892–1893. Pauline Brunius
Pauline Brunius, née ''Emma Maria Pauline Lindstedt'' (10 February 1881 in Stockholm – 30 March 1954 in Stockholm) was a Swedish stage and film actor, screenwriter and film and theatre director. She was the managing director of the Royal Dramatic Theatre from 1938 to 1948. Biography Born in 1881, Brunius became a ballet student in 1891, but ended her ballet studies in favor of spoken drama. She was engaged at the theatre Olympiateatern in 1902. Jointly with her spouse ( John W. Brunius) and colleague, Gösta Ekman (senior), she was the managing director of the theatre Oscarsteatern in 1926–1932. In 1938, she was engaged as the managing director of the Royal Dramatic Theatre. Axel Anderberg
Axel Johan Anderberg (November 27, 1860 – March 27, 1937) was a Swedish architect. He was active from the 1880s to the early 1930s. Biography Anderberg was born in Kristianstad in Skåne County, Sweden. Anderberg received his education in the architectural school of the Royal Institute of Technology (1880-1884), and the architecture section of the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts (1884–1887), after which he spent a year traveling to Germany, France and Italy. His first significant commission was the new Opera House in Stockholm (1889–1898), which replaced the Gustavian Opera House which had dated to 1782. After having won the contest for the building he spent additional time abroad for the particular purpose of studying theatre architecture. Nine (musical)
''Nine'' is a musical whose original conception and music and lyrics are by Maury Yeston, with a book by Arthur Kopit. It is based on Federico Fellini's semi-autobiographical 1963 film ''8½''. The show tells the story of film director Guido Contini, who is dreading his imminent 40th birthday and facing a midlife crisis, which is blocking his creative impulses and entangling him in a web of romantic difficulties in early-1960s Venice. Conceived and written and composed by Yeston as a class project in the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop in 1973, it was later adapted with a book by Mario Fratti, and then with another a book by Arthur Kopit. The original Broadway production opened in 1982 and ran for 729 performances, starring Raul Julia. The musical won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and has enjoyed a number of revivals. ''Les brigands'' (''The Bandits'') is an opéra bouffe, or operetta, by Jacques Offenbach to a French libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. Meilhac and Halévy's libretto lampoons both serious drama (Schiller's play ''The Robbers'') and opéra comique (''Fra Diavolo'' and ''Les diamants de la couronne'' by Auber). The plot is cheerfully amoral in its presentation of theft as a basic principle of society rather than as an aberration. As Falsacappa, the brigand chieftain, notes: "Everybody steals according to their position in society." The piece premiered in Paris in 1869 and has received periodic revivals in France and elsewhere, both in French and in translation. Gösta Ekman
Hans Gösta Gustaf Ekman (; 28 July 1939 – 1 April 2017) was a Swedish actor, comedian, and director. Career Ekman was born in Stockholm, Sweden, and was the son of the director Hasse Ekman and Agneta (née Wrangel). Ekman represented the third generation in a family of prominent Swedish actors. Sandrew Metronome is a Scandinavian film distribution company formed in the 1990s. It was one of the biggest distributor companies in the Nordic countries. Sandrew Metronome was established by the Swedish company Sandrews and the Danish Metronome. Later the Norwegian media company Schibsted acquired Metronome and became joint owner with Sandrews. Schibsted gained sole owner in 2006, but later divested its holdings of Sandrew Metronome to a group of investors and its former CEO in 2013. Between 2005 and 2007 Sandrew Metronome sold its cinemas.
