Oscar Shaw
Oscar Shaw (born Oscar Schwartz, October 11, 1887, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – died March 6, 1967, in Little Neck, New York), was a stage and screen actor and singer, remembered primarily today for his role as Bob Adams in the first film starring the Marx Bros., ''The Cocoanuts'' (1929). United States census records show that Shaw was already working as a stage actor in 1910, while still living with his mother, brother, and stepfather. In 1913, Shaw married Mary Louise Givler (a native of Carlisle, Pennsylvania), in England, where they both appeared in a show called the "First American Ragtime Review" at the London Opera House. The couple lived in the Village of Great Neck Estates, and in 1937, later moved to the Thomaston section of Great Neck, first in a private home, and later lived in an apartment building on Welwyn Road. Victor Jacobi
Victor Jacobi (22 October 1883 – 10 December 1921) was a Hungarian operetta composer. He studied at the Zeneakadémia (Academy of Music) in Budapest at the same time as the noted Hungarian composers Imre Kálmán and Albert Szirmai. Jacobi began his career as "''Jakabfi Viktor''" on 17 December 1904 with the operetta "'' A rátartós királykisasszony''". His most famous operetta is "'' Szibill''". The performance of this operetta was cancelled in London because of the beginning of World War I. After that, he left London for the United States and during his stay in New York City he became very ill. He died there at the age of 38 and was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx. ''Going Crooked'' is a 1926 American silent crime film produced and distributed by the Fox Film Corporation. It was directed by George Melford and stars Bessie Love. The film is preserved at the Museum of Modern Art, the George Eastman House, and the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Plot Mordaunt (von Seyffertitz) and his gang use Marie (Love) as an unwitting accomplice in the theft of the acclaimed Rajah diamond. During the heist, a man is killed, and innocent Rogers (Fenton) is later sentenced to death for the murder. Marie works with District Attorney Banning (Shaw) to get Mordaunt to confess, just in time to save Rogers from the electric chair. Marie and Shaw are married. "All Alone" is a popular waltz ballad composed by Irving Berlin in 1924. It was interpolated into the Broadway show '' The Music Box Revue of 1924'' where it was sung by Grace Moore and Oscar Shaw. Moore sat at one end of the stage under a tightly focused spotlight, singing it into a telephone, while Oscar Shaw sat at the other, doing the same. There were many successful recordings of it in the 1925 including those by Al Jolson, John McCormack, Paul Whiteman, Cliff Edwards, Abe Lyman, Ben Selvin and Lewis James. The song became a standard and has been recorded many times and performed by Lucie Arnaz in the " Here's Lucy" episode "Mod, Mod Lucy" and Miss Piggy in an episode of "The Muppet Show". Irving Berlin (born Israel Beilin; yi, ישראל ביילין; May 11, 1888 – September 22, 1989) was a Russian-American composer, songwriter and lyricist. His music forms a large part of the Great American Songbook. Born in Imperial Russia, Berlin arrived in the United States at the age of five. He published his first song, "Marie from Sunny Italy", in 1907, receiving 33 cents for the publishing rights,Starr, Larry and Waterman, Christopher, American Popular Music: From Minstrelsy to MP3, Oxford University Press, 2009, pg. 64 and had his first major international hit, "Alexander's Ragtime Band", in 1911.
