Dear Sir
''Dear Sir'' is the debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Chan Marshall, also known as Cat Power, released in October 1995 on Runt Records. Recorded in New York City in December 1994 during studio sessions with Tim Foljahn and Steve Shelley (which also produced the material on her second album, ''Myra Lee'', released one year later), the album displays Marshall's sparse guitar playing and early lo-fi influence. The album had originally been conceived as an EP, and features covers of songs by Tom Waits and This Kind of Punishment. The album was reissued by Plain Recordings in 2001 on CD and vinyl, with an alternate recording of the song "Great Expectations" as the eighth track. Charlyn Marie "Chan" Marshall ( ; born January 21, 1972), better known by her stage name Cat Power, is an American singer-songwriter, musician and model. Cat Power was originally the name of her first band, but has become her stage name as a solo artist. Born in Atlanta, Marshall was raised throughout the southern United States, and began performing in local bands in Atlanta in the early 1990s. After opening for Liz Phair in 1993, she worked with Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth and Tim Foljahn of Two Dollar Guitar, with whom she recorded her first two albums, '' Dear Sir'' (1995) and '' Myra Lee'' (1996), on the same day in 1994. Liz Phair
Elizabeth Clark Phair (born April 17, 1967) is an American singer-songwriter. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Phair was raised primarily in the Chicago area. After graduating from Oberlin College in 1990, she attempted to start a musical career in San Francisco, California, but returned to her home in Chicago, where she began self-releasing audio cassettes under the name Girly Sound, Girly-Sound. The tapes led to a recording contract with the independent record label Matador Records. Chris Matthews (musician)
Chris Matthews is a New Zealand rock musician. He has been a member of numerous bands, notably Children's Hour, This Kind of Punishment and The Headless Chickens for whom he was guitarist and lead vocalist, as well as writer or co-writer of many of their songs. Among these was the 1991 single "Cruise Control", co-written by Matthews and Michael Lawry, which was voted by APRA's members as the 76th greatest New Zealand song of all time. In 2008, he formed Chris Matthews and Robot Monkey Orchestra and released the album ''The Map of love'', a cycle of songs based on the poems of Dylan Thomas. Kathleen Patricia Brennan (born 1955) is an American musician, songwriter, record producer, and artist. She is known for her work as a co-writer, producer, and influence on the work of her husband Tom Waits. Biography Brennan was born in Cork, Ireland and grew up in Johnsburg, Illinois in the US, after her family moved there when she was young. Brennan and Waits first met in 1978 when Waits made his acting debut in ''Paradise Alley'' while Brennan was a scriptwriter, and then again during production of the Francis Ford Coppola film ''One from the Heart.'' Headlights (Cat Power Song)
"Headlights" is a song by American singer-songwriter Cat Power, released as her debut single in 1993 by The Making of Americans. The song is a first-person narrative that tells of a girl dying on the road after a car accident. The photograph featured on the front cover of the single was taken by photographer Emmet Gowin in Danville, Virginia in 1969, titled "Nancy." The single received a limited 500 pressings on 7-inch vinyl. Composition The song was written by Marshall, with the addition of Bob Bannister (guitar, violin) and Glen Thrasher (drums). Sonic Youth
Sonic Youth was an American rock band based in New York City, formed in 1981.
