Oro-Medonte 77's
The Oro-Medonte 77's were a Junior ice hockey team based out of Oro-Medonte, Ontario, Canada. Their arena was in the community of Guthrie, Ontario. They played in the Greater Metro Junior 'A' Hockey League. History In April 2008, it was announced that Oro-Medonte had received its first junior hockey club since 1992. In May it was announced that the club would be known as the Oro-Medonte 77's. The name pays homage to Oro's long hockey history, and the team's predecessor the Oro 77's who participated in the Georgian Bay Junior C Hockey League from 1977 until 1992 On September 15, 2008, the Oro-Medonte 77's played their first ever GMHL game, on the road, in Richmond Hill against the Ontario Lightning Rams. Oro-Medonte, Ontario
Oro-Medonte is a township in south-central Ontario, Canada, on the northwestern shores of Lake Simcoe in Simcoe County. The two neighbouring townships of Oro and Medonte were merged in 1994, under a restructuring of Simcoe County. It is divided into lines based on the concession system implemented by the British colonial government in the mid-18th century. Currently there are 15 lines that are now streets and highway exits off Highway 11. Algoma Avalanche
The Algoma Avalanche were a Canadian Junior ice hockey team based in Thessalon, Ontario, Canada. They played in the Greater Metro Junior 'A' Hockey League. History The Avalanche were formed in the summer of 2009. The Avalanche are the first junior team in Thessalon since the folding of the Thessalon Flyers of the North of Superior Junior B Hockey League. On September 12, 2009, the Avalanche played their first game. On the road, Algoma lost 7-4 to the Deseronto Storm. The next evening, the Avalanche traveled to Beaverton, Ontario and picked up their first win, beating the Brock Bucks 6-3. On September 25, 2009, the Avalanche played their first home game and defeated their local rival Elliot Lake Bobcats 4-2. In a touching pre-game ceremony, local hockey legend, and multiple-time OHA champion Lloyd Boyer, who had died of cancer a few weeks before, was honored with a moment of silence. The Toronto Blue Ice Jets were a Junior ice hockey team based out of Thornhill, Ontario, Canada. The team played in the Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League (GMHL). History The Jets were Thornhill's only Junior hockey team after the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League's Toronto Thunderbirds relocated to King City to become the Villanova Knights. They were founded as the Toronto Canada Moose in the inaugural year of the GMHL in the 2006–07 season as one of seven original league members. The first game took place on September 9, 2006, against the King Wild in Thornhill, Ontario resulting in a 5-1 loss. Nipissing Alouettes
The Nipissing Alouettes were a Canadian Junior ice hockey team based out of Sturgeon Falls, Ontario. They played in the Greater Metro Junior 'A' Hockey League. History The Alouettes follow in the town's hockey tradition of the Sturgeon Falls Lynx who played in the town from 1994 until 2002 when they became the North Bay Skyhawks. The first game in the Alouettes' history took place on September 9, 2006, against the Richmond Hill Rams. The result was a 5–1 loss. The first goal in Alouette history was scored by Matt Mascarin. Justin Longchamps took the loss in goal in the first game in Alouettes history, but played well facing more than 50 shots. Ontario Lightning Rams
The Richmond Hill Rams were a Junior ice hockey team based in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada. They played in the Greater Metro Junior 'A' Hockey League. History Richmond Hill Rams The Rams were a resurrection of the Richmond Hill Rams of the old Metro Junior A Hockey League, which folded in 1995. The creation of the new team, although in a renegade league, was the first Junior team to be established in Richmond Hill in 12 seasons. The Rams' first game was the first in the GMHL's history. The game was at the Ram's home arena and took place on September 8, 2006, against King Wild. The final result was a 6–0 victory for the Rams. The first goal in the team's history was scored by Darren Archebald, in the first period on the powerplay. Archebald's goal was also the first in the league's history as well. The Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League (GMHL) is a Canadian developmental junior ice hockey league. The league has primarily had teams in the Greater Toronto Area, Central Ontario, Northeastern Ontario, and Quebec. In 2019, they added three teams from Alberta. Junior hockey is a level of competitive ice hockey generally for players between 16 and 21 years of age. Junior hockey leagues in the United States and Canada are considered amateur (with some exceptions) and operate within regions of each country.
