Orient Club
The Orient Club is a private members' club, in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Established in 1884, it was the first Ceylonese-only social club in the country. Membership of the club is by nomination and election only. History The club was founded in 1894, by a number of leading Ceylonese, including Walter Pereira. It was formed by the Sinhalese elite in response to the restrictions on Ceylonese membership by the exclusive British Colombo Club, established earlier in 1871, and denied membership to Europeans. Walter Pereira
James Cecil Walter Pereira (10 September 1856 – 9 June 1915) was the 4th Solicitor General of Ceylon. He was appointed on 1906, succeeding Ponnambalam Ramanathan, and held the office until 1912. He was succeeded by James Van Langenberg. James Cecil Walter Pereira was born on 10 September 1856, the second son of John Pereira, a school master at Queen's College and Susan Sally née de Haan. He was educated at the Colombo Academy, St. Thomas' College and graduated from Calcutta University. In 1878 he was admitted as a proctor of the District Court of Colombo, having served an apprenticeship under Frederick Charles Loos. In 1880 he enrolled as a proctor of the Supreme Court of Colombo. In late 1885 he travelled to England and was admitted to the Middle Temple and was called to the bar in early 1887. Rajakeeya Mawatha
Rajakeeya Mawatha (Sinhalese: රාජකීය මාවත) (English: ''Royal Avenue'' formerly ''Race Course Avenue'') is a street in Colombo, Sri Lanka, named after Royal College Colombo, whose grounds border it on the southern side. Located in the prominent residential area of Cinnamon Gardens in Colombo 7, it is home to many notable residents and old mansions. The street connects Reid Avenue with Thurstan Road and is the Northern border of Royal College, Colombo. It runs east-west line - at its western end is situated the Orient Club, while at the eastern end is the Obeyesekere Walawa. Cinnamon Gardens
Cinnamon Gardens ( si, කුරුඳු වත්ත ''Kurundu Vaththa'', ta, கறுவாத் தோட்டம்) is an affluent neighbourhood in Colombo, Sri Lanka located 3 kilometers south-east from Colombo's centre. Cinnamon Gardens is named from the former cinnamon plantation in this area. In the year 1789, there were of cinnamon trees in the gardens. Colombo Club
The Colombo Club is the second oldest gentlemen's club in Sri Lanka. The Colombo Club was established on 4 March 1871 by prominent British colonialists in the island at the Colombo Club building, Colpity Race Course Grandstand. The original resolution stating, "''That a club be formed for the purpose of establishing and maintaining reading, billiard, card and refreshment rooms in Colombo for the benefit of the members and generally for the carrying out of all purposes incidental to social clubs of the above description. And that the Club be called The Colombo Club.''" On 15 July 1871 the club received the official seal approval when the Governors of British Ceylon, Governor Sir Hercules Robinson agreed to become the club's patron and president. Frederick Dornhorst
Frederick Dornhorst, KC was a Ceylonese ( Sri Lankan) barrister and King's Advocate. Educated at Colombo Academy (now Royal College Colombo), Dornhorst became a teacher at the Colombo Academy before moving on to a legal career and becoming a barrister at the Inner Temple. In 1903 he was sworn in as a King's Counsel with Ponnambalam Ramanathan and Thomas De Sampayo, the first "silks" of the Bar of Ceylon.
