Oregon Route 229
Oregon Route 229 is an Oregon state highway that runs along the lower reaches of the Siletz River, on the central Oregon coast. The highway is also known as the Siletz Highway No. 181 (see Oregon highways and routes). Route description Oregon Route 229 begins at a junction with U.S. Route 20 and U.S. Route 20 Business, north of the city of Toledo. It heads north from there, past Olalla Reservoir, meeting the Siletz River in the town of Siletz. From there, it continues north, generally following the course of the river downstream (and crossing it several times), eventually turning west and heading towards the Pacific Ocean. Close to the end of the road is the historic town of Kernville; shortly after, OR 229 ends at an intersection with U.S. Route 101, located between Lincoln City and Gleneden Beach. Toledo, Oregon
Toledo is a city located on the Yaquina River and along U.S. Route 20 in Lincoln County, in the U.S. state of Oregon. The population was 3,465 at the 2010 census. The city was a 2009 All-America City Award finalist. History European-American settlement in Toledo began in 1866, when John Graham, his son Joseph, and William Mackey, claimed land made available by the Homestead Act of 1862. The site was called "Graham's Landing" until a post office was established two years later. Joseph D. Graham, John's son, named the post office for Toledo, Ohio, because he was homesick. William Mackey was the first postmaster. Toledo was made the county seat of the newly established Lincoln County in 1893. The city incorporated in 1893 and reincorporated in 1905. Kernville, Oregon
Kernville is an unincorporated community in Lincoln County, Oregon, United States. It is located near the intersection of U.S. Route 101 and Oregon Route 229, where the Siletz River enters Siletz Bay. There are two communities, known as "old" and "new" Kernville, in close proximity. Old Kernville is considered a ghost town. The "old" Kernville was the first European community in the area. It was started in 1896 by Daniel and John H. Kern, who operated a salmon cannery, Kern Brothers Packing Company, on the north bank of the Siletz River. At the time, the isolated location was only accessible by boat. In 1907 the cannery was sold and the new owners dismantled the building and rebuilt it on the south bank of the river. The sawmill, post office and original community of Kernville were also located on the more accessible south bank. Siletz River
The Siletz River flows about to the Pacific Ocean through coastal mountains in the U.S. state of Oregon. Formed by the confluence of its north and south forks near Valsetz in Polk County, it winds through the Central Oregon Coast Range. The river, draining a watershed of , empties into Siletz Bay, south of Lincoln City in Lincoln County. Although the river travels in river miles, its winding course begins only about east of the ocean, and its mouth and source latitudes are almost identical. Lincoln City is a city in Lincoln County on the Oregon Coast of the United States, between Tillamook and Newport. It is named after the county, which was named in honor of former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. The population was 9,815 at the 2020 Census. Lincoln County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, its population was 50,395. The county seat is Newport.
