Oregon NORML
Oregon NORML is the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) affiliate for the U.S. state of Oregon. Description and history The chapter has had up to 3,000 dues-paying members. In 2003, Oregon NORML meetings were held at Mt. Tabor Theater. They were later held at Village Ballroom. During Madeline Martinez's tenure as the affiliate's executive director, the chapter helped operate the World Famous Cannabis Cafe. Oregon () is a U.S. state, state in the Pacific Northwest region of the Western United States. Madeline Martinez
Madeline Martinez is an American cannabis rights activist. Career Martinez worked as correctional officer in California, before retiring and focusing on cannabis activism. Cannabis activism Martinez is a longtime advocate for the legalization of cannabis. She started her efforts by collecting signatures for Oregon Ballot Measure 67 (1998), which modified state law to allow the cultivation, possession, and use of marijuana by doctor recommendation for patients with certain medical conditions. She later worked on the successful Oregon Ballot Measure 91 (2014) campaign, which legalized the recreational use of marijuana. In 2009, she established the World Famous Cannabis Cafe, which operated until March 2016. National Organization For The Reform Of Marijuana Laws
The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML ) is a social welfare organization based in Washington, D.C., that advocates for the reform of marijuana laws in the United States regarding both medical and non-medical use. According to their website, NORML supports "the removal of all penalties for the private possession and responsible use of marijuana by adults, including cultivation for personal use, and casual nonprofit transfers of small amounts" and advocates for "the creation of a legal and regulatory framework for marijuana's production and retail sale to adults". NORML also has a sister organization, NORML Foundation, that focuses on educational efforts and providing legal assistance and support to people affected negatively by current marijuana laws. World Famous Cannabis Cafe
The World Famous Cannabis Cafe opened in Portland, Oregon, as the first cafe in the United States for state-authorized medical marijuana cardholders. Established in 2009 by Madeline Martinez, then the Executive Director of Oregon NORML, the Cannabis Cafe was established as a place for Oregon Medical Marijuana Program (OMMP) cardholders to socialize and safely medicate out of public view as required by state law. Members of the club had to be a current OMMP cardholder and pay an entry fee. The cafe hosted a number of activities, including the annual Oregon Medical Cannabis Awards, which began in 2002. The OMCA was the first medical marijuana strain evaluation competition in the United States, and the only competition to track the medical conditions of the judges and medical effectiveness of the strains relative to specific conditions.
