Oregon's Most Endangered Places
Oregon's Most Endangered Places, established in 2011, is a list compiled by the Historic Preservation League of Oregon that raises awareness of the state's "historic treasures in need of the advocacy and support to save them from demise". Listings The League's first list of endangered places was released in 2011 and included ten sites. The 2012 and 2013 lists included nine and ten sites, respectively. Portland holds the record for the most number of sites on the list, with three. Two sites from both Astoria and Redmond have been included. Historic Preservation League Of Oregon
Restore Oregon, formerly the Historic Preservation League of Oregon (HPLO), is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation with a mission to "Preserve, Reuse, and Pass Forward Oregon’s Historic Resources to Ensure Livable, Sustainable Communities." Formed in Eugene, Oregon, in 1976, Restore Oregon was officially incorporated in 1977 and relocated to Portland, Oregon, soon thereafter. In addition to the Board of Directors, Restore Oregon has several active volunteer committees and a regional and topical Board of Advisors. As of February 2009, Peggy Moretti serves as the organization’s Executive Director. Known for 37 years as the Historic Preservation League of Oregon, the group announced in July 2013 that it was changing its name to Restore Oregon. Petersen Rock Garden
Petersen Rock Garden, formerly Petersen's Rock Garden and also known as the Petersen Rock Gardens, is a rock garden and museum on , located between the cities of Bend and Redmond in Deschutes County, Oregon, United States. Rasmus Petersen, a Danish immigrant who settled in Central Oregon in the early 1900s, began constructing the garden in 1935 using rocks he found within an radius of his family home. Petersen constructed detailed miniature castles, churches and other small buildings and monuments from a variety of rock types. He incorporated other design elements such as bridges, water features, and natural landscaping. Petersen worked on the garden until his death in 1952; the garden has remained in his family's care since then. The garden, considered a roadside attraction with novelty architecture, includes roaming peafowl and a museum with a gift shop that sells rocks. Corbett, Oregon
Corbett is an unincorporated community on the Columbia River in eastern Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. It is located on the Historic Columbia River Highway (a.k.a. Crown Point Highway) between the Sandy River and Crown Point. Corbett was named for prominent pioneer Senator Henry W. Corbett. Senator Corbett purchased a farm in the area in 1885. View Point Inn
The View Point Inn, located in Corbett, Oregon, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2008, the inn was used in filming of prom scenes in the first film of the ''Twilight Saga'' film series. The exposure generated by the film was credited with giving the hotel and its restaurant a boost in business. In July 2011, the building's second floor was gutted by a fire, and its owners, Geoff Thompson and Angelo Simione, faced financial difficulties, as the insurance on the building had lapsed. In October 2013, plans were made to rebuild and reopen the historic structure, with work slated to begin the winter of 2013–2014. Restore Oregon listed the inn on its 2012 list of Endangered Places; in December 2014 it reported that restoration was unlikely. In 2016, Heiner and Sheron Fruehauf purchased the Inn and began restoration. According to the owners, they anticipate reopening the Inn as a holistic health retreat in 2024. Marconi (formerly called Fisherman's) is an unincorporated community in Marin County, California. It is located on the northeast shore of Tomales Bay, about seven miles (11 km) south-southeast of the village of Tomales, at an elevation of about 70 feet (21 meters) above sea level. Marconi is located in the area of the town of Marshall, California. The inhabitants of an old Native American settlement called "Fisherman's" later shipped seafood from here via railroad. Then, in 1913, the Marconi Wireless Company bought this site to establish a transpacific wireless telegraph station. Albany is the county seat of Linn County, Oregon, and is the eleventh largest city in that state. Albany is located in the Willamette Valley at the confluence of the Calapooia River and the Willamette River in both Linn and Benton counties, just east of Corvallis and south of Salem. The Portland Skidmore/Old Town Historic District is an historic district in Portland, Oregon's Old Town Chinatown neighborhood, in the United States. Pendleton is a city and the county seat of Umatilla County, Oregon. Jantzen Beach Carousel
The Jantzen Beach Carousel, also known as the C. W. Parker Four-Row Park Carousel, is a carousel formerly installed at Portland, Oregon's Jantzen Beach, in the United States. History The carousel was built circa 1904 by C. W. Parker in Abilene, Kansas, for use at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. It was later moved to Venice Beach, California, where it began operating in 1921. In 1928, the carousel was repossessed and its parts were relocated to Portland for the opening of Jantzen Beach Amusement Park. Since then, the park became a shopping mall, Jantzen Beach Center. The carousel was removed during the mall's $50 million renovation in 2012, and reportedly remains in storage on site. In 1987, the carousel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, along with four others.
