Ordona is a small town and ''comune'' of the province of Foggia in the region of Apulia in southern Italy. Geography Ascoli Satriano, Carapelle, Foggia, Orta Nova, Cerignola are nearby towns. History Ordona lies near the ancient site of ''Herdonia'' or ''Herdoniae'', a Roman town where Hannibal fought a major battle against the Roman Army. The ruins of Herdonia were discovered in the years after the Second World War, and remain only partially excavated; they are a short drive from the present-day town. The ancient centre, founded by the Daunians, immediately enjoyed a noteworthy development and saw its maximum splendour. Its economic decline began during the 4th Century BC. The construction of defensive walls during this period suggests a period of battles with other centres in the region, probably comprising clashes with the Greek hegemonic cities in the territory, among them neighbouring Taranto. Daunians
The Daunians ( el, Δαύνιοι, Daúnioi; la, Daunii) were an Iapygian tribe that inhabited northern Apulia in classical antiquity. Two other Iapygian tribes, the Peucetians and the Messapians, inhabited central and southern Apulia respectively. All three tribes spoke the Messapic language, but had developed separate archaeological cultures by the seventh century BC. The Daunians lived in the Daunia region, which extended from the Daunian Mountains river in the southeast to the Gargano peninsula in the northwest. This region is mostly coincident with the Province of Foggia and part of Province of Barletta-Andria-Trani today. Daunians and Oscans came into contact in northern Daunia and southern Samnite regions. Gradually, parts of northern Daunia became "Oscanized". Orta Nova
Orta Nova is a town and ''comune'' about from Foggia, in the region of Apulia, in southern Italy. It stretches to the southern part of the ''Tavoliere'' (Foggia's plain) on the right bank of the River Carapelle. The origins of the name "Orta" are rather uncertain, as it the word may indicate: "crooked-born", from the Latin ''ortus'', or "garden" from the Latin word ''hortus'', or also simply "East". History The Romans built a courier post in the area, previously a territory of the Daunians. In the early Middle Ages a hamlet, whose name is mentioned in a document dating back to 1184, was built on the ruins of the Roman post. This hamlet came under the control of the Benedictine abbey of Venosa.
